Lady Govs volleyball begins OVC Championship, Friday

Austin Peay State University GovernorsMorehead, KY – Austin Peay State University’s volleyball team begins competition in the 2010 Ohio Valley Conference Volleyball Championship with a 3:30pm (CT), Friday semifinal contest at Wetherby Gym on the Morehead State campus.

The championship begins Thursday with two quarterfinal contests. No. 3 seed Jacksonville State will face No. 6 seed Tennessee Tech will open the tournament with a 3:30pm contest. No. 4 seed Murray State will face No. 5 Eastern Kentucky in the other quarterfinal contest at 6:00pm.

Austin Peay (24-6), the second seed, will face the winner of the Jacksonville State-Tennessee Tech contest in Friday’s first semifinal contest. Regular-season champion and host Morehead State will face the other quarterfinal winner in the 6:00pm semifinal.

The two semifinal winners will meet in the 4:00pm, Saturday championship game, with the winner of that contest receiving the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Volleyball Championship.

The Lady Govs enter the tournament with a six-game win streak with their last loss coming at Morehead State, October 26th. Austin Peay is 6-4 this season against the five teams that qualified for the tournament, with one loss to both Jacksonville State and Morehead State and two losses to Eastern Kentucky.

Nikki DoyleSophomore outside hitter Nikki Doyle and senior middle blocker Jessica Mollmann, who were each All-OVC selections, lead Austin Peay entering the tournament. Doyle averaged a team-best 3.28 kills per set against the tournament field, but recorded just a .185 attack percentage.

Mollmann recorded 2.40 kills per set against the field but led the team with a .314 attack percentage and 34 blocks (0.81 blocks per set).

“This weekend is the most important one we will face this season,” said Lady Govs head coach Haley Janicek. “When it comes down to it – the winner is going to be the team with the best fundamentals and the most heart. What we as a team have to worry about is consistency and familiarity. Our focus all season long has been to get one percent better every day and in every match. This weekend is no different.”
