Clarksville Water System Scores 100 on State’s Sanitary Survey

Clarksville Gas & Water DepartmentClarksville, TN – Clarksville Gas and Water is immensely proud of the department’s water system personnel for achieving a perfect score of 100 on its recent Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) Sanitary Survey. The good news was relayed to Clarksville’s Water and Wastewater Division Operations Manager, Chris Lambert, by phone from TDEC Nashville Field Officer, Erich Webber, on November 18th.

“The Clarksville Water Department operates their system professionally and maintains regular contact with Environment and Conservation’s Division of Water Supply,” said Environment and Conservation’s Nashville Field Office Manager Erich Webber.  “They continually demonstrate their expertise and have been successful in their efforts to protect the public and produce good water quality, which is reflected in such an outstanding score.”

The sanitary survey is an unannounced on-site audit of the total operations and maintenance of a public water system by TDEC’s, Division of Water Supply. The three-day survey inspects every facet of the water system including the complete operations, maintenance and safety programs, records and documentation, water treatment techniques, water quality tests, water distribution system, cross connection, backflow prevention, engineering, equipment, facilities and construction procedures. TDEC performed Clarksville’s survey in late September for the 12-month period from September 2009 to September 2010 which encompassed the period during and after the May flood.

Sanitary Survey (TDEC definition): “Sanitary Survey” means an on-site review of the water source, facilities, equipment, operation and maintenance of a public water system for the purpose of evaluating the adequacy of such sources, facilities, equipment, operation and maintenance for producing and distributing safe drinking water.

Gas and Water credits the perfect score to many aspects, but largely attributes the employees’ hard work, attention to detail and dedication to the in-house certification program, an enhancement to the State program, which requires water employees from entry level to managers to acquire and maintain State certifications in the categories of water treatment operator, water distribution operator, cross connection and backflow prevention. Other important contributing factors are open communication lines both internally within Gas and Water and externally with TDEC.

The perfect score is important to the community as a demonstration of the Clarksville Water System’s constant commitment to providing safe and high quality drinking water to the public. Maintaining this level of excellence is ongoing throughout the water system from the many tests performed daily on the water quality at several points at the water plant and distribution system to its delivery at the customer’s faucet, all done under stringent federal and state regulations.
