Customs House Museum’s January Happenings

The Customs House Museum and Cultural CenterThe Customs House Museum has a history of bringing the best of regional and area culture to the Clarksville Area. Each month they schedule a series of interesting and fun events and activities that informs and educates the community.

In January, the museum is hosting – Cover Up, an exhibit of quilts from the Museum Collection; An American Tradition, photographic documentation of a Montgomery County family of tobacco farmers; Beyond Light: A Visual History of the Aladdin Mantle Lamp Company; and Photographically Speaking: The photography of Malcolm Glass and Mitzi Cross.

They also have the following activities planned – Art & Lunch lecture: 100 Years of Aladdin Lighting, with Bill Courter; Lets find toys, explore the museum from a child’s perspective and includes a story and a craft; and Sunday Family Fun Day, bring your imagination and create some craft stick structures.

Daily admission to the Museum is very inexpensive, and they have annual membership options available for the whole family. The Museum is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Sunday from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Museum members are admitted free of charge. The 2nd Saturday of every month is Free Admission day.

The museum will be closed on Friday December 31st and Saturday January 1st The museum is closed to the public every Monday.

Daily Admission Prices:

  • $7 Adults
  • $5 Seniors (65+)
  • $5 College Students with I.D.
  • $3 Children (6-18)
  • Free Children under 6 and  Museum Member

Cover Up

Quilts from the museum collection
through January 30th

Cover Up contains over a dozen quilts from the museum’s personal collection. These quilts date as far back as the 1830’sand include a wide range of various patterns and techniques. This exhibit aslo includes a history about quilts as well as an interactive quilt table.

An American Tradition

A photographic documentation of a Montgomery County family of tobacco farmers

An American Tradition is a documentary by photographer David Robert Farmerie about the life of the Head family during the tobacco growing season. Farmerie learns about the challenges that come with tobacco farming and documents the family’s long-standing traditions.

Beyond Light: A Visual History of the Aladdin Mantle Lamp Company

Lamps, lunchboxes, thermoses and more

The Aladdin Company has been making quality products for decades. From their uniquely designed signature glass lamps, to their memorable and collectible tin lunch box school kits, the Aladdin exhibit has something for everyone to enjoy

Photographically Speaking:

The photography of Malcolm Glass and Mitzi Cross
Through February 27th

Cross and Glass work together and individually on projects in art and writing.  They have shown their work in numerous galleries and juried exhibitions in the mid-south.

Model trains

The Museum’s model trains run every Sunday 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

“Let’s Find Toys”

January 5th & 6th
10:30 am  – 11:30 am

This activity for children 3 – 5 years old and their adults explores the museum from a child’s perspective and includes a story and a craft. Younger siblings are welcome. Cost is $7 for adults, $2 for children and includes admission to the museum. Free to museum members. For more information contact Sue Lewis at (931) 648-5780.

Sunday Family Fun Day

January 30th
1:00 pm – 5:00 pm

About the Customs House Museum

From its inception, the Museum has been committed to serving this community. This commitment is reflected through services such as scheduled free admission days throughout the year; free tours to all Clarksville-Montgomery County public schools; and monthly family-oriented special events.

The Customs House Museum is located at the corner of Second and Commerce Streets. Regular museum hours are 10 am to 5 pm Tuesday through Saturday, and 1 to 5 pm on Sundays. Adult admission is $5, Sr. Citizens $4, College ID $2, Ages 6 to 18 $1, and under six is free.
