Mayor McMillan representing Clarksville at the United States Conference of Mayors

Clarksville, TN – Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan is attending the United States Conference of Mayors’ winter meeting Wednesday through Friday in Washington, D.C.

The mayor learned on Saturday that President Obama plans to meet with the more than 250 mayors from across the country on Friday at the White House.

“I’m happy to be a part of the conference, and I look forward to learning as much as I can while I’m in Washington,” McMillan said.

After the White House visit, the mayors will meet with Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk.

McMillan was invited to the conference by Chattanooga Mayor Ron Littlefield, an advisory board member of the group.

In his invitation letter, Littlefield acknowledged “the fiscal challenges before you and other cities across the state,” and offered free registration for Clarksville’s new mayor at the 79th winter meeting of the mayors’ conference.

McMillan will be one of only three Tennessee mayors to attend along with Littlefield and Hendersonville’s Scott Foster.

The conference will be presenting its 2011 Metro Agenda for America, which focuses on creating jobs, fully funding Community Development Block Grants, continuing energy block grants, increasing local transportation investments and reducing unfunded federal mandates.

The meeting’s agenda features various sessions on those and other topics.

“I appreciate Mayor Littlefield inviting me to attend,” McMillan said. “This conference will be all about jobs, jobs, jobs and forming strategies to create jobs, which is what I said we needed to do during my campaign. Also, many of the sessions will address the same issues we have in this community, like transportation and energy conservation.”
