Lady Govs close out January with visit to Morehead State

Austin Peay State University GovernorsMorehead, KY – Austin Peay women’s basketball team will wrap up the January portion of its schedule with a 4:00pm (CT), Saturday, Ohio Valley Conference contest against Morehead State at Johnson Arena.

The Lady Govs started the two-game road trip with a 61-56 loss at Eastern Kentucky, Thursday. Austin Peay never trailed by more than seven points in the contest but held the lead for less than four minutes total. The Lady Govs lost both the rebounding (41-42) and turnover (19-16) battles, but it was the seven point free-throw differential (9-16) that proved too much to overcome.

Austin Peay’s bench did the heavy lifting in Thursday’s loss. Senior Dalila Thomas led the team with 13 points off the bench while freshman Shyra Brown grabbed a team-best nine rebounds in 17 minutes off the bench. Senior Brooke Faulkner led the Lady Govs starting five with 10 points.

Morehead State stayed in the regular-season title race with a 60-58 victory against Tennessee State, Saturday. With ten seconds remaining junior Courtney Lumpkin went coast-to-coast and made a high-arcing layup for the game-winning basket. Both teams made more than 40 percent of their field goals in a game that opened up considerably in the second half, Tennessee State outscoring Morehead State, 50-48 in the final frame.

Dalila ThomasLumpkin finished with 21 points on 8-of-19 field-goal shooting. Senior Chynna Bozeman led the Eagles with 28 points on 9-of-24 shooting. Sophomore Ashar Harris and junior Linda Dixon each chipped in double-doubles. Harris finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds while Dixon posted 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Austin Peay won the first meeting between the two teams – a 60-58 decision, December 21st, in Clarksville. The Lady Govs needed late-game heroics from junior Whitney Hanley to pull out the victory. She made a pair of free throws with 16 seconds remaining to set the final score and then blocked a three-point try from Bozeman just before the final horn sounded.

Key Notables From Lady Govs at Eastern Kentucky

Shyra BrownSenior Dalila Thomas led the Lady Govs with 13 points, it was the first time she has led APSU in scoring during her two-year career.

Freshman Shyra Brown led Austin Peay with nine rebounds, it was the first time she led the Lady Govs in rebounding.

Austin Peay’s bench, led by Thomas’ effort, scored 22 points. It was the second consecutive game the reserves scored more than 20 points.

Senior Brooke Faulkner scored 10 points and was the only starter to reach double-digit scoring territory.

Brooke FaulknerAfter outrebounding EKU, 23-18, in the first half, Austin Peay was outrebounded 24-18 in the second half and lost the overall rebounding battle, 42-41.

Austin Peay had the lead for less than four minutes in the contest which featured seven ties and four lead changes.

The Lady Govs surrendered 25 free-throw attempts to the Lady Colonels, who converted 16. Austin Peay was just 9-of-14 at the free-throw line – the seven-point difference at the charity stripe providing EKU the winning margin.

Next Up: UT Martin

Austin Peay begins a three-game homestand when it hosts UT Martin, Thursday. The Lady Govs will seek to end a two-game losing streak to the Skyhawks which won the season’s first meeting 78-54 without the services of freshman Heather Butler, the OVC’s leading scorer (19.8 ppg). It will be the 65th meeting between the two teams.
