Lady Govs host Murray State on “Red Zone” night at the Dunn Center

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay women’s basketball team continues its three-game homestand when it hosts Murray State in a 5:15pm, Saturday, Ohio Valley Conference contest at the Dunn Center. The game is “Red Zone” night presented by Wendy’s at the Dunn Center with Lady Govs fans wearing red receiving discounted admission for the night’s doubleheader.

The Lady Govs returned to the Dunn Center in victorious fashion, posting a 69-61 come-from-behind victory against UT Martin, Thursday. Austin Peay outscored the Skyhawks, 47-27, in the second half to rally from a 13-point deficit. It was the largest deficit overcome in a victory by APSU this season. Austin Peay shot 56.7 percent (17-of-30) from the field in the second frame, including 5-of-10 from three-point range.

Junior Whitney Hanley recorded her season’s third double-double in the win, filling up the final box score with 18 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and two steals. Senior Brooke Faulkner rallied from a tough opening half, scoring all 16 of her points in the second half and playing a key role in the comeback effort.

Murray State dropped its third consecutive conference outing, falling by a 73-70 margin at Tennessee State, Thursday. The Racers surrendered a nine-point first-half lead in the loss. Murray State made just 33.3 percent (19-of-57) of its field goals while permitting Tennessee State to make 40.4 percent (23-of-57) of its attempts.

Whitney HanleyJessica Winfrey led Murray State with a 17-point, 12-rebound double-double effort, but made just 5-of-12 from the field. Rachael Isom added 14 points and handed out a team-high three assists.

Austin Peay won the season’s first meeting between the two teams, a 71-55 decision on January 8th in Murray. The Lady Govs used a 33-8 run in the first half to build a 35-22  halftime lead and did not look back. Hanley led the Lady Govs with a 16-point, 12-rebound effort in the win. Freshman Nicole Olszewski chipped in a game-high 17 points, dished out five assists and nabbed four steals.

Key Notables From Lady Govs vs. UT Martin

Brooke FaulknerAustin Peay’s 47-point second half was led by Brooke Faulkner (16 points) and Whitney Hanley (13 points). They finished the game with 34 of the team’s 69 points.

Hanley led the team in scoring and rebounds, finishing with an 18-point, 10-rebound double double while also recording five assists, three blocks and two steals.

Faulkner scored all 16 of her points in the second half. She made two of her four three-pointers during the Lady Govs 17-4 run that tied the game, 45-45. Her third three-pointer gave APSU the lead for good at the 8:20 mark and her fourth, and final, three-pointer helped secure the lead at the 2:21 mark.

Jasmine RaynerFreshman Nicole Olszewski had a quiet night scoring-wise, finishing with just four points, but had six rebounds, five assists and two steals in a 35-minute outing.

The Lady Govs forwards combined for 29 points, led by Jasmine Rayner’s nine points with Meghan Bussabarger and Dalila Thomas each adding eight points.

The 47 points in the second half were one-point shy of their season high in a half (48, second half vs. Utah Valley).

Meghan BussabargerAfter hitting only one three-point field goal (1-11) in the first half,  the Lady Govs made five from outside (5-10) in the second half.

The Lady Govs made 17 field goals and shot 56.7 percent from the field in the second half. That effort more than doubled their eight field goals and 27.6 percent first half shooting.

In the first half UT Martin’s trap defense forced the Lady Govs into 14 turnovers. In the second half the Lady Govs corrected that problem, committing just four turnovers.

Next Up: Tennessee State

Austin Peay and Tennessee State – separated by 50 miles – will meet for the 53rd time, next Saturday. The game will be a Lady Govs “Pink Out” to support the WBCA’s Pink Zone breast cancer awareness initiative. Austin Peay leads the series by a 30-22 margin but has lost six of the last eight meetings. The Lady Govs won this season’s earlier meeting between the two teams by a 60-45 margin, January 15th.
