Dr. Bruce Myers inducted into Red Coat Society

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Dr. Bruce Myers, who has served Austin Peay State University and its athletics department in multiple capacities during his 40 years at the school, was inducted into the Red Coat Society, Saturday.

The Red Coat Society serves as a Hall of Fame of service for the Governors Club, APSU’s Athletics booster club. This is the eighth year for the Red Coat Society.

Dr. Myers was recognized at halftime of the Governors’ 7:30pm, Saturday basketball contest with Tennessee State. A reception took place 4:00pm, in the second level Governors Club Room. He was honored with a red coat.

Dr. Myers has been an Austin Peay professor for more than 40 years. After receiving his doctorate in mathematics from Kentucky, he began teaching at Austin Peay in 1970. However, it was his developing and teaching of classes in computer science led to a computer science degree with two concentrations in 1979. Later, Myers was instrumental in computer science becoming a separate department, which he now chairs, in 2003.

Despite the necessary time demanded in developing the university’s computer science department, Myers always has found time for another passion—Austin Peay athletics. He has served as the official scorekeeper for home Austin Peay men’s basketball games since the Dunn Center opened in the 1975-76 season.

He was named to Faculty Athletics Committee in the late 1980s and was appointed committee chair in 1995 by then-President Sal Rinella. At the same time he also became the University’s Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR), a member of the University faculty who serves as a liaison between athletics and the institution and represents the University in the institution’s relationships with the NCAA and the Ohio Valley Conference.

That appointment has allowed Myers to be appointed to a pair of NCAA committees, the Initial Eligibility Waiver Committee and NCAA Research Committee, the latter helping formulate data to help determine the Academic Progress Report (APR).

In addition, Myers has helped lead APSU athletics through a pair of NCAA Certifications (2000, 2007) and through the NCAA Certification process has served on NCAA Peer Review teams to review self studies of other NCAA institutions.

Myers also has served nearly 15 years as member of the University’s Athletics Hall of Fame Committee.

A longtime member of the Governors Club, he has been a member of the booster organization’s executive committee since 1995. He has supported all the APSU athletic programs in a variety of ways and is often in attendance at a multitude of contests.

To be eligible for the Red Coat Society, individuals must be: a member in good standing of the Governors Club for at least five years; have supported the athletic programs at Austin Peay through financial contributions or participation in Governors Club fundraisers and other events; have supported more than one sport both at home and away whenever possible and recognized within the APSU community for their association with Austin Peay athletics.
