Lucky Adventures with Outdoor Recreation in March

Morale, Welfare and RecreationFort Campbell, KY – Learn the basics of climbing with Climbing 101 on March 1st from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. This clinic will cover the basics of rock climbing such as belay technique, equipment use, proper climbing technique, and will prepare you with the basic knowledge to venture into the high adrenaline based sport of rock climbing. Meet at Freedom Fighters Physical Fitness Facility.

The fee for the Climbing 101 clinic is $15.00 and participants must be at least 16 years of age. Preregistration required by 12:00pm on March 1st. 

The first Women in the Wilderness clinic in March showcases Outdoor Recreation’s Archery Range. Learn the basics of archery and take aim at developing a new skill. Clinic takes place on March 3rd from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, and March 8 from 10:00am to 12:00pm. Cost is $9.00 per person.  

     

Hiking

Enjoy a hike at Short Springs on March 5th! This woodland is one of the best hiking destinations in Middle Tennessee. A well-developed trail system passes by clear streams that form waterfalls as they drop off of the Eastern Highland Rim into the Nashville Basin. Dry, oak-cloaked ridges stand tall between these deep valleys where the water flows. Get here early to hike all of the trails. This 420-acre state natural area includes rich woods, forest ravines, low cascades, springs, and big waterfalls. We will be hiking 2.9 miles on the moderate hiking trail.

Bring snacks, water, and a packed lunch. Participants 10 years of age or older are welcome to join us from 9:00am until 2:00pm. The cost is $15.00 per person and registration is required by 4:00pm on March 4th.

Paintball

Bunker down and show them who is boss with Women in the Wilderness Paintball for beginners. This is a great opportunity to get introduced to a sport that combines the thrill of hide and seek with skill and strategy. Cost of clinic is $25.00 per person and includes supplies.

Coveralls can be rented for an additional $5.00. Get ready to see some paint on March 10th from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, or March 15th 10:00am to 12:00pm.

Camping and Canoe Trip

Get camping with ODR for an overnight camping trip to Big South Fork March 11th through 13th. Encompassing 125,000 acres of the Cumberland Plateau, Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area protects the free-flowing Big South Fork of the Cumberland River and its tributaries.

The area boasts miles of scenic gorges and sandstone bluffs, and is rich with natural and historic features. We will be paddling a 19 mile stretch of the river, encompassing small amounts of white water up to class II+. Trip departs Friday, where we will drive to the put-in and camp till morning. Saturday morning we will depart, traveling nearly 10 miles to Big Shoals campsite (primitive backcountry). Here we will make camp for the night, and enjoy a catered dinner with all the fixins’.

Sunday morning will start off with faster water until reaching Devils Falls, a portage able class IV rapid before reaching the take out. This trip includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner (Saturday), breakfast and lunch (Sunday), transportation, and river equipment. Please bring your own sleeping bag, sleeping pad, and tent. Previous canoe experience strongly recommended but not required.

Cost of trip is $65.00 per person and pre-registration is required by March 10th. There is also a mandatory pre-trip meeting at 5:00pm on March 10th at the main ODR office.

Mountain Biking

Calling all mountain bikers! Join Outdoor Recreation for a trail ride through the trails located around Outdoor Recreation on March 14th at 3:30pm. This is a great way to meet people who share the love for mountain biking. If you do not have a bike but are interested in participating the fee is $5.00 per person. However bring your own bike and the Mountain Bike Meet-up is free. Everyone age 14 and up is welcome.

Pre-registration is not required, but strongly encouraged for anyone needing a bike. Please pre-register by 3:30pm on March 14th.

Skeet Shooting

Score some range time with Outdoor Recreation’s Skeet Range and learn proper operation and procedures used at the Skeet and Trap facility. Instruction will be provided by Don Donnelly who is a certified trap and skeet instructor as well as a Civilian of the Year award recipient. All needed equipment will be supplied.

The Skeet Shooting Clinic cost $12.00 per person and takes place March 22nd from 12:00pm to 2:00pm, or March 29th from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. 

Rock Climbing

Did you know there are multiple styles of Rock Climbing? Join us for an introduction to Sport Climbing on March 26th. We will start the day at the Challenge Course Complex, where we will cover the basics of Sport Climbing, introducing new gear, and belay techniques. After lunch we will be traveling to Kings Bluff to put the new skill into practice on
some real rock. Transportation and equipment provided. Please bring secure shoes, appropriate clothing, water, snacks, and a packed lunch.

This trip is geared towards intermediate climbers who have previous climbing experience and costs $35.00.  Pre-registration required by 4:00pm on March 25th.

Mountain Biking

Chickasaw Trace is a small 300 acre park, bordering the Duck River about 45 min south west of Nashville. Though this park is small, it offers some of the best Mountain Biking in Middle Tennessee. We will be easing ourselves from beginner trails to more intermediate trails while peddling 5-7 miles! Please bring snacks, water, and closed toe shoes.

Cost is $15.00 per person and includes mountain bikes, helmets, and transportation. Meet up at ODR on March 27th at 9:00am. Pre-register by 4:00pm on March 25th.

Canoe Trips

Starting this March we will be offering bi-weekly Family Floats Canoe Trips every other Wednesday. Trip covers a 4 mile stretch of the Cumberland River. Join us for the first Family Floats Canoe Trip on March 30th. Cost is $5.00 per person and pre-registration is required by 2:00pm day of the trip.

Outdoor Recreation also does customized private trips for units or Family Readiness Groups (FRGs). Trip registration can be done in person or over the phone, seven days a week, between the hours of 7:30am and 4:30pm. Locations and times of trips are subject to change due to weather conditions. Please dress appropriately for each event.

Cancellations initiated by the participant 48 hours in advance of the trip are entitled to a full refund. However, refunds for cancellations made within 48 hours of the trip will be determined by management.
