Oxford, MS - Austin Peay’s softball dropped two games Saturday at the Fifth annual Red and Blue Classic, hosted by the University of Mississippi, letting a lead get away against Southeast Missouri in a 6-3 morning loss, and a 11-2 five-inning defeat to South Alabama in the afternoon contest.
Austin Peay (2-10) got off to a good start against Southeast Missouri, by taking its first lead of the classic in the bottom of the third inning on junior Amy Mills’ first home run of the season – which drove in senior Tiffany Smith, who had reached on a walk.
Southeast Missouri (3-6) would cut the Lady Govs led in half with a run in the top of the fourth inning, but the Lady Govs would respond in the bottom of the inning by getting the run back on an RBI single by senior Randal Davenport, scoring freshman Lauren de Castro – who had opened the inning with a base hit.
The Red Hawks would cut Austin Peay’s led to 3-2 in the top of the sixth inning, but it was the seventh inning that proved to be killer for the Lady Govs.
Holding the one-run lead, the Red Hawks got their first three batters on base – via a walk and two bunts – to load the bases against Lady Gov pitcher Morgan Brewer.
Brewer would get the next SEMO hitter out on a comebacker, forcing the lead runner at the plate for the first out, but the next three Red Hawk hitters drove in four runs, on two singles and a sacrifice fly, to take a 6-3 lead.
Austin Peay would threaten in the bottom of the inning, with Mills reaching on a single and Catie Cozart drawing a walk to bring the possible tying run to the plate, but Brewer ended the game with a fly ball to right.
In the nightcap, Austin Peay fell behind early giving up three runs to South Alabama (10-3) in the first inning and trailed 4-0 before getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third.
South Alabama would close out the game by scoring the final seven runs of the game to end the game in five innings, 11-2.
