APSU Center for Excellence for the Creative Arts awarded the 2010-11 Ovation awards

Acuff Chair of ExcellenceClarksville, TN – The Acuff Circle of Excellence Community Advisory Board of the Austin Peay State University Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts presented its annual Ovation Awards on Sunday, March 6th to those who have made significant contributions to the artistic and cultural life of the Clarksville community.

The Ovation Awards were established in 1995 by the APSU Center of Excellence for the Creative Arts.

The Ovation Award for Distinguished Artist was presented to Susan Bryant. Bryant, a professor of art at APSU, is an accomplished photographer whose work has been widely exhibited across the United States in solo and juried exhibitions. She is also a dedicated member of the community. In 2001, she co-founded the Downtown Artists Co-op, which has more than 25 active artists members and a gallery with 12 exhibits each year.

Empty Bowls Clarksville received the Ovation Award for Community Organization or Program. The community-wide organization uses art to empower people to be creative for a cause. The “cause” is to alleviate hunger. Hundreds of people each year throw and/or paint and glaze pottery soup bowls. The bowls raise awareness for feeding the hungry, while the money raised from these events benefits Loaves & Fishes and Urban Ministries.

Silke’s Old World Breads received the Ovation Award for Business or Corporation. The business has a strong reputation for supporting the Clarksville arts community. Ever since owner Silke Tyler, a talented watercolorist, opened her café on College Street several years ago, her restaurant has doubled as a gallery for local artists. The works of four or five artists adorn the walls at any given time, and the café hosts special exhibits for a single artist several times a year.

The George Mabry Award was presented to Dr. Anne Glass. A talented musician, Glass has been associated with the APSU music department since 1962. She became a full-time member of the faculty in 1975, and she continues to teach piano and Music 2050, a course for non-majors. She has studied and performed across the globe, but Glass has also been a significant contributor to Clarksville’s musical life for years. She is an organist at Trinity Episcopal Church, and she has served on the board of the Clarksville Community-APSU Concert Series for a decade. She is often seen accompanying various high school choirs during concert season, and Glass serves as adjudicator for piano auditions at schools and colleges in the surrounding area.

This year also marked the addition of a new Ovation Award category. Last March, Christopher Burawa, the center’s director, announced that the Acuff Circle of Excellence Community Advisory Board had decided to add a Youth Artist award specifically geared for high-school-age emerging artists. Five student members of the Roxy Regional School of the Arts Theater Program took home the inaugural honor. Those students are Webb Booth, Elizabeth Coleman, Autumn Crofton, Haedyn King and Hugh Poland.
