Campbell Crossing Zero Energy Homes Awarded Sustainable Project of the Year

Middle Tennessee Branch of the Associated General Contractors Honors Campbell Crossing

Campbell CrossingFort Campbell, KY – The Middle Tennessee Branch of the Associated General Contractors (AGC) recently awarded Campbell Crossing’s Zero Energy Homes project as Sustainable Project of the Year.

The Lend Lease Campbell Crossing Project team at Fort Campbell, KY received the Platinum Award for the Zero Energy Homes (ZEH) completed in October 2010. The award was presented as part of the “Build Tennessee” Awards to recognize firms for their excellence in serving the construction community of Tennessee.

A panel of esteemed judges representing different aspects of the design and construction industry and AGC Board Members, reviewed the award applications. The judging emphasis was focused on the construction process and challenges the team faced – not the building’s size, aesthetics or amenities. Members of the Lend Lease ZEH construction team and subcontractors were on hand at a ceremony to accept the esteemed award.

The Zero Energy Homes of Campbell Crossing represent the first Zero Energy Homes ever constructed on a military installation and the first known Zero Energy duplex in the United States. The homes feature a design and construction approach focused on energy efficiency, resulting in a home that functions on 54 percent less energy than a home of comparable size constructed using today’s building standards. The remaining energy needs for the home are supplied by roof mounted photovoltaic solar panels, resulting in a net zero energy home that produces as much energy as it consumes on a yearly basis.  This project synthesized the use of multiple advanced technologies and concepts for building energy efficiency.

The Campbell Crossing Zero Energy Home project has received the ENERGY STAR and the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Indoor airPLUS certification, which recognize new homes equipped with a comprehensive set of Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) features. The homes scored a -5 on the ENERGY STAR Home Energy Rating (HERS) Index, which results in a home that performs 105 percent better than homes built to today’s residential building code standards.  The Project is also scheduled to receive the US Green Building Council (USGBC) LEED® for Homes™ Platinum Certification (currently under USGBC Evaluation).

Each home in the duplex will have the following estimated emission reductions:

  • Carbon Dioxide (CO2) — 10.4 tons per year
  • Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) — 104.6 pounds per year
  • Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) — 34.8 pounds per year

The Campbell Crossing Zero Energy Home project involved extensive collaboration among three consultants, three Design Groups, two LEED® Third Party Rater/Verifiers, 23 subcontractors and 13 suppliers.  As Campbell Crossing project owner, Lend Lease performed as the Design-Builder and General Contractor for this innovative project.
