Lady Govs golf hopes to carry momentum into Belmont Invitational

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s golf team hopes to carry momentum from its final-round SIU Invitational play into the Belmont Invitational, slated for Monday and Tuesday at the Old Hickory Country Club just outside of Nashville.

The two-day 36-hole tournament will be played on a par-71, 6,044-yard course established in 1926. It will feature eight teams, including the Lady Govs, host Belmont, Middle Tennessee, Trevecca, UAB, Lipscomb and two Ohio Valley Conference foes, Tennessee Tech and Tennessee State.

Austin Peay is coming off superb final-round finish at Southern Illinois. APSU sliced 16 strokes off its first round to fire a tourney-low 313, Monday, to finish in a third-place tie. Senior Chelsea Harris finished second in the tournament (78-73=151), missing first by just one stroke.

“We are looking forward to playing close to home against some Tennessee schools,” APSU coach Sara Robson said.  “We are coming off a great round at SIU and I am hoping that gives us some confidence for this tournament.

Chelsea Harris“We still have some things to work on but we are beginning to get back into our games after the winter and bad weather.”

All eight Lady Govs will compete in tournament, with seniors Chelsea Harris and Catie Tucker, redshirt freshman Tabitha Beard, sophomore Holly Batey and freshman Tala Mumford comprising the team. Senior Ashley Wathen, junior Ashley Averitt and freshman Rachel Deaton will compete as individuals.

Several Lady Govs team members have played Old Hickory previously. Last week, three Lady Govs team members had not played Hickory Ridge Golf Club in Carbondale and when weather conditions forced cancellation of Saturday’s practice round it was reflected in first-round tourney scores.

Catie Tucker“Some of our girls have played this golf course so being familiar with the course not only will help but allow them to relax as well and hopefully allow them to enjoy the game they love.  Sometimes I think they put too much pressure on themselves–think way too much-and that hinders their game.”

The tourney will begin 9:00am, Monday from double tees (No. 1 and No. 10) and it will conclude with a 9:30am, Tuesday shotgun start.
