Panthers no match for Lady Govs tennis

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN - Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team got back on track with a convincing 6-1 Ohio Valley Conference win, Saturday, against Eastern Illinois.

After a shaky doubles performance against UT Martin, Friday, the Lady Govs were solid in winning the doubles point against the Panthers. They went on to win all five singles matches played, EIU’s only point coming as the Lady Govs defaulted at No. 6.

“I’ve felt for a while like we haven’t played enough matches to really get a good feel on the court,” head coach Malik Tabet said. “Today, we were able to make some important adjustments that will pay off in the long run. We played aggressive and I feel like we made some strides in this match.”

Sophomore Carolin Weikard and freshman Kimberly Loo won 8-4 at No. 1 doubles. As the Lady Govs top doubles team, Weikard and Loo have been consistent with nine-straight wins throughout the season. At No. 2 doubles, junior Vanja Tomic and freshman Andra Cornea picked up an 8-4 win as well.

Vanja TomicTomic would go on to win a three-set match at No. 1 singles, dropping the second set, but winning the third in decisive fashion. Other than Tomic’s match, the Lady Govs took the rest of the singles matches in straight-sets.

Weikard allowed only one match to EIU’s Jennifer Kim at No. 2, while freshman Rachel Margolis gave up four games in a straight-set win at No. 3. Cornea and Loo also won at Nos. 4 and 5.
