APSU Women’s Softball
Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team looks to turn around its recent struggles, 5:00pm, Tuesday, as it hosts UT Martin for a single Ohio Valley Conference contest at Cheryl Holt Field.
The Lady Govs (9-29, 4-13 OVC) lost five of six games this past week, including two-of-three to Murray State in the weekend conference series. But APSU comes into Tuesday’s contest already having beaten the Skyhawks once in their first meeting, 7-6, in nine innings during the first game of a doubleheader in Martin, March 22nd.
Tennessee Martin (24-14, 13-3 OVC) comes in still in contention for the regular-season conference championship, just 1 ½ games behind OVC leader Eastern Illinois.Austin Peay is led offensively by freshman Lauren de Castro (.275, 3 HR, 14 RBI), while juniors Catie Cozart (.262, 2 HR, 12 RBI) and Amy Mills (.262, 2 HR, 10 RBI) follow.
In the circle, sophomore Morgan Brewer tops the Lady Govs pitching staff with a 5-10 win-loss mark this season, including a 4.29 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 106 innings of work.
Offensively, the Skyhawks have four players hitting more than .300 coming into the game, led by Amanda Brandenburg’s .350 average, with 8 HR and 27 RBI. Brandenburg was OVC Player of the Week after batting .500 with five extra-base hits last week. Meanwhile, Chelsea Jones (13-5, 1.77 ERA, 140 strikeouts in 115 innings) leads UT Martin’s pitchers.
