Golf Govs improve, but still finish tied for 16th at Arkansas State event

Austin Peay State University GovernorsJonesboro, AR – Austin Peay State University men’s golf team battled back from a disappoint first round to shoot a much-improved final round in the ASU Red Wolf Intercollegiate, hosted by Arkansas State at the par-72 RidgePoint Country Club.

The Governors shot a seven-over 295, Tuesday, to finish at 602 and in a 16th-place tie with fellow Ohio Valley Conference foe UT Martin in the 18-team field. Host Arkansas State rallied to win the event with a 566 while Central Arkansas was one stroke back followed by Jacksonville State at 571. Another OVC school, Murray State, was tied for seventh at 575 while future league foe SIU Edwardsville was in 10th (581) and Eastern Illinois in 15th (595).

The tourney, originally scheduled for 54 holes, was shortened to 36 when storms forced cancellation of the second 18 holes, Monday. In fact, Austin Peay was the only team that finished the first round, Monday, and the young Govs paid for it in the windy conditions as APSU was able to post just one score (Dustin Korte) at 75 or better.

Tuesday was much better. In fact, on the much-softer RidgePoint course, Korte fired a 70 for a two-round one-over-par 145. In fact, his round included six birdies, including on the second and third holes, but also included two bogeys and one double-bogey, the latter costing him a score in the 60s.

Marco ItenThe sophomore was not alone in shooting below par. Freshman Marco Iten bounced back from consecutive round-opening bogeys at No. 10 and No. 11 to finish at one-under 71 for a two-round 147. After starting the day at plus-two, he played consistent golf, tallying a birdie on 12 and then produced back-to-back birdies on No. 5 and No. 6 for his one-under.

Another freshman, Anthony Bradley, came in at even par, playing the back nine even at 36, collecting a birdie at 18 to offset a bogey at 13. Then on the front side Bradley was forced to rally from a double-bogey on No. 2 with a birdie on No. 3 before finishing the round with a birdie three at No. 9. Bradley, who shot 77 on the first day, ended the tournament at 149.

Anthony BradleyBut unfortunately, the Governors had to count junior Logan Loftus’ 82 during the final day as senior Luke Sherrod could only muster an 85. Loftus could not over a trio of double bogeys along the way to finish at 164 overall, the same score at Sherrod.

The Governors will attempt to bounce from their struggles in Arkansas by playing this Saturday and Sunday in the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational in Muncie, IN.
