1st Annual Joint Juvenile Justice Conference to take place at APSU

DMC Task ForceClarksville, TN – The 1st Annual Joint Juvenile Justice Conference will take place Saturday, April 16th, 2011 on the campus of Austin Peay State University. The Conference will be located on the 3rd floor in the  Morgan University Center from 8:30am to 2:30pm.

The purpose of the conference is the prevention of juvenile delinquency via increasing the awareness of issues, programs and resources available to youth, parents, teachers, college students, advocates, officers of the court, and concerned citizens.

The conference is sponsored by the Montgomery County Disproportionate Minority Contact (DMC) Task Force, the Tennessee Commission on Children & Youth and Austin Peay State University’s Juvenile Justice Grant.

Meals will be available including a Continental Breakfast after registering at 8:00am, followed by an 11:30am lunch. Pre-registration is required to receive a Ticket for Lunch!

The conference is free and open to the public.

  • 9:00am  Opening Session – Dr. Merriel Bullock Neal, Esquire Chair, Montgomery County. DMC Task Force & Principal Investigator, APSU Juvenile Justice Grant.  and Mr. John Hall, Chair State DMC Task Force & Project SHAPE/Memphis Public Schools

Morning  Sessions

There will be two different tracts of sessions. One set of sessions will be geared to youth (Junior & Senior High school students) and the other set of sessions will be geared to adults.

  • Bullying – Dr. Susan Jones & Ms. Amelia Owen, Certified Trainers Montgomery County Public Schools
  • Mentoring – Ms. Amy Carroll, Director Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Clarksville,TN
  • Gang Awareness – Pastor Tommy Vallejos, Director Hispanic Organization for Progress and Education (H.O.P.E.)
  • Luncheon Keynote Speaker – DeCosta Hastings, Educator Metro Nashville Public Schools Davidson County Executive Committee who will talk about his journey to success.
