Austin Peay State University GovernorsMuncie, IN – Austin Peay State University men’s golf team had to settle for a sixth-place finish at Ball State’s Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational.

With the OVC Golf Championship coming up next Monday, the Earl Yestingsmeier was the final regular-season tournament for the Govs. While head coach Kirk Kayden expected to come out with a better idea for his tournament lineup, it turned out to be 54 holes that seemed to muddy the waters even more.

“We’re still lacking the consistency that we need in order to become a really good team,” Kayden said. “We’ve got some guys that can play well at times, but we haven’t really been able to string together three good rounds. Today, we didn’t manage our play around the greens as well as we could have.”

Dustin KorteSophomore Dustin Korte led the Govs with his season’s third top-20 finish, falling to 18th after a final-round 79 to finish with a 225 (73-73-79). A pair of freshmen in Marco Iten (77-71-79) and Anthony Bradley (73-74-81) were behind him with a 227 and 228, respectively.

Junior Drew Miller also had another nice tournament as he attempts to play his way into the OVC Tournament lineup. Miller matched Bradley’s 228, improving each round of the event and leading the Govs with a final-round 74. Freshmen Trey Tarpley and Alasdair MacLennan made up the rest of the Govs lineup in 61st and 85th.

Drew Miller“Drew has had a couple of nice tournaments for us,” Kayden. “He played well at the Grub Mart and then had a couple of good rounds for us this weekend. What we need are five guys that can show up for three rounds and give us some 72, 73, 74s. When we get that, we’ll be in good shape.”

Austin Peay will spend the following week in qualifying for the OVC tournament, which is being played at Dickson’s GreyStone Golf Club, April 25th and 27th.
