Football Govs add Florida linebacker prospect

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Linebacker Rodney Williams, who was considered one of the top linebacker prospects in Florida entering his senior season, has signed scholarship papers to play football for Austin Peay State University.

A second-team All-State linebacker as a junior after earning honorable mention as a sophomore for Spoto High School in Tampa, FL, Williams transferred to Hillsborough High School as a senior and then watched his final season adversely affected by a high ankle sprain.

Still, the 6-1, 224-pound Williams finished with 80 tackles, including three quarterback sacks, in 13 games along with three pass break ups and three rushing TDs as a running back.

But those numbers paled in comparison with his junior season at Spoto High School. He finished with 116 tackles in 10 games, including four sacks. He had three games with 15 or more tackles, including 17 against Wharton.

“He was one of the Top 25 linebacker prospects in Florida entering his senior year and that says a lot right there,” APSU coach Rick Christophel said. “He had an FBS offer but it was a combination of things that apparently forced a lot of people to fall off him. The injury certainly was a factor.

“He played at Hillsborough in the fall but transferred back to Spoto to graduate. We talked to his coach at Spoto and Rodney has had to fight through a lot of things. We certainly are looking forward to having him here.”
