Govs host Lipscomb in lone midweek affair

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay’s baseball team, freshly minted as the Ohio Valley Conference’s co-leader, returns home to host Lipscomb in a 6:00pm, Tuesday non-conference tilt at Raymond C. Hand Park. 

Austin Peay (17-18, 7-4 OVC) is home after its most successful trip to Jacksonville, AL in program history, winning a three-game series against the OVC leading Jacksonville State. The Govs sit atop the OVC standings with Southeast Missouri for the first time since winning the league’s regular-season title in 2007.

The Govs carried the weekend at Jacksonville State both at the plate and on the mound. Austin Peay batted .320 and averaged 6.7 runs per game on the weekend. The Govs pitching staff held the Gamecocks to 4.0 runs per game despite allowing a .337 batting average. Austin Peay pitchers held the Gamecocks to a .275 batting average with runners in scoring position.

Offensively, eight Govs hitters recorded three or more hits over the weekend. Sophomore first baseman John Hogan and junior center fielder Michael Blanchard each had five hits. Hogan finished the weekend with a 5-for-12 (.417) effort that included four doubles and five RBI. Blanchard was 5-for-15 (.333) but his one RBI was huge as it provided the game-winning run in the Govs Sunday victory.

Reed HarperSophomore shortstop Reed Harper brings a career-best 13-game hitting streak into Tuesday’s contest. Harper is batting .413 (19-of-46) during the streak, which encompasses the entire month of April, with seven doubles and nine RBI. Junior third baseman Greg Bachman leads the Govs with a .429 (21-of-49) batting average with 10 RBI in April.

Junior right-hander Andy Cox (0-2, 10.38 ERA) will get the nod for Tuesday’s outing. It will be his third consecutive mid-week start. Cox lost his first decision as a starter last week against Western Kentucky, April 12th, after allowing 11 runs over four innings.

Lipscomb (14-23, 5-10 Atlantic Sun) returns to action following its 2-1 Atlantic Sun Conference series win against USC Upstate. The Bisons have won three of their last five outings.

Andy CoxSenior designated hitter Richie Goodenow leads Lipscomb with a .368 batting average, posting 17 multiple-hit games this season. Junior left fielder M.L. Williams second on the team with a .355 batting average but has a team-best 13 doubles this season. Junior third baseman Josh Chism leads the Bisons with 26 RBI.

Freshman right-hander Chris Orphanos (1-0) will make his season’s second start, Tuesday. He picked up his season’s first win against Alabama A&M, last Wednesday, allowing two runs over four innings.
