Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team’s incoming class for 2011-12 has reached seven with the addition of multi-talented Sarah Rasmussen, from Greenwood, CA.

Rasmussen, who pitches, as well as plays shortstop and outfield at Golden Sierra High School, joins head coach Casey Dickson’s early signing period additions of Erica Reis, Kady Bland, Lauren Bradley, Paige Neely, Laurel Burroughs and Courtney Ervin.

“Sarah has great versatility as a power hitter, with speed on the bases, as an outfielder with a good arm and she also pitches,” Dickson said. “That gives us quite a lot of opportunities to be able to use her talents. She reminds me a little bit of Lauren de Castro, someone who can pitch, hit, play in the outfield and steal some bases as well.

“But one of her biggest strengths is her power. She’s a tall player (5-foot-9) and being able to hit with power will help us, because we have four slappers coming in, because we’ll have a lot of lefties and adding Sarah to the hitting lineup could give us a good mix.”

As of April 21nd, Rasmussen led the 19-3 Golden Sierra High Grizzlies with a .571 batting average, which includes eight doubles, five triples and a school-record 10 home runs.

She also has scored 34 runs, driven in 38 and is a perfect 16-for-16 in stolen base attempts this season.

In the circle, she’s authored an 11-2 win-loss mark thus far, with a 1.25 ERA to go with 120 strikeouts in 67 innings of work.

“The campus is beautiful and small, which was very appealing to me,” said Rasmussen, in a statement on her summer team’s website (All-American Sports Academy 18U Gold).

“I didn’t have the feeling of being overwhelmed. All of the facilities are very nice, from the housing, classroom and athletic facilities. I loved my visit and I’m excited to have this opportunity.”

As a junior — despite missing most if the season due to injury – she led her team with a .431 batting average, with four doubles and triples and 20 stolen bases.

Her sophomore season saw her hit .444, with eight doubles, six triples, seven home runs and 19 stolen bases, while recording an 11-10 win-loss mark in the circle with a 1.10 ERA and 274 strikeouts in 140.1 innings of work.

Even as a freshman she compiled impressive numbers, batting .585 with 12 doubles, two triples and six home runs, while scoring 33 runs and driving in 37 in 23 games.

As a pitcher that season, she authored a 17-6 win-loss mark, with 186 strikeouts in 134 innings and a microscopic 0.94 ERA.

Rasmussen has been named to the Golden Empire League All-League team three times, including being the league’s co-MVP her freshman year.
