Small Arms fire kills 101st Airborne Division Soldier; Additional Information

Michael KirtonFort Campbell KY, 101st Airborne DivisionFort Campbell, KY – A 101st Airborne Division Soldier died May 18th after being struck by insurgent small arms fire and mortar rounds in Kandahar province, Afghanistan.

Corporal Brandon Michael Kirton, 25, of Centennial, CO, was an Infantryman assigned to Charlie Company, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). He joined the Army in January 2008 and arrived at Fort Campbell in July 2008.

His awards and decorations include: Bronze Star Medal; Purple Heart Medal; Army Commendation Medal; Army Achievement Medal; Army Good Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; North Atlantic Treaty Organization Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge.

Kirton is survived by his father, Robert C. Kirton and mother, Kathleen A. Kirton, both of Parker, CO. He is also survived by his daughter, Heaven Kirton of Centennial, CO.

A memorial service will be held for Cpl. Kirton in Afghanistan. Fort Campbell holds a monthly Eagle Remembrance Ceremony to honor fallen Screaming Eagles. The next ceremony will be held June 8th at 4:00pm.
