Sounds Open Road Trip With 6-1 Victory In New Orleans

Nashville SoundsMetairie, LA – The Nashville Sounds opened their road trip with a 6-1 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs on Saturday evening at Zephyr Field.

The win was the third in a row for Nashville (24-31), which continued its recent dominance in New Orleans. The Sounds have won 15 of their last 21 games played at Zephyr Field.

Left-hander Sam Narron (4-2) picked up his team-leading fourth victory by tossing 5 2/3 innings of scoreless, four-hit ball for the Sounds. With the effort, the lanky southpaw lowered his team-leading ERA to 3.13 through 11 outings. Narron walked three batters and struck out five in his 99-pitch effort and helped his own cause with a 2-for-3 night at the plate.

The Sounds grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Eric Farris drew a one-out walk from New Orleans starter Mariano Gomez and scored when Edwin Maysonet followed with an RBI double to center.

Nashville extended its lead to 3-0 in the third. Narron led off with a single and scored a batter later when Brandon Boggs ripped a double to right. Boggs later scored the visitors’ second run of the frame when he hustled home on a Maysonet sacrifice fly to center.

Narron worked out of jams in the fourth and fifth to keep New Orleans off the board. In the fourth, the Z’s loaded the bases with two outs before the southpaw escaped the jam by grounding out Jesus Merchan. An inning later, a single and walk gave the home team a pair of baserunners with only one out, but Narron induced an inning-ending double play groundout from former Sounds All-Star Vinny Rottino.

The Sounds left the bases loaded in the sixth against Z’s reliever Todd Doolittle, who induced an inning-ending popup from Narron.

The Zephyrs broke up the Sounds’ shutout bid in the seventh with a run off reliever Justin James on a two-out Mike Cervanek double.

Nashville put the game on ice with a three-run eighth against Z’s reliever Victor Garate, extending the lead to 6-1. Brett Carroll (2-for-4) opened the inning with a double before the next two batters were retired. After Caleb Gindl drew a two-out free pass, Taylor Green launched a run-scoring doubled to left to make it a 4-1 cushion. Pinch-hitter extraordinaire Erick Almonte followed with a two-run single center to stretch the visitors’ lead to five.

Gomez (0-1) took a loss in his first Triple-A appearance of the season after allowing three runs on seven hits over five innings of action.

The teams continue their series with another 6:00pm matchup on Sunday evening. Right-hander Amaury Rivas (3-5, 4.65) will take the hill for the Sounds and try to end his seven-start winless stretch. He’ll face New Orleans right-hander Tom Koehler (5-1, 4.24).
