Jeremy Dobbs and Ryne Harper selected in MLB First-Year Draft, two signees also picked

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University junior left-handed pitcher Jeremy Dobbs and senior right-handed pitcher Ryne Harper were selected in the 33rd and 37th rounds, respectively, of the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, Wednesday.

Jeremy Dobbs

Jeremy DobbsDobbs, of Owensboro, KY, was selected with the 993rd overall pick by the Seattle Mariners. He was named the Ohio Valley Conference’s “Pitcher of the Year” in 2011 and was a first-team All-OVC selection.

Dobbs led the Govs with a 9-3 record this season while posting a 3.59 ERA. He also recorded 87 strikeouts in 90.1 innings and limited opponents to a .258 batting average.

Ryne Harper

Ryne HarperHarper, of Clarksville, TN, was grabbed with the 1136th overall pick by the Atlanta Braves. He became the Govs closer after the season’s first three weeks and led the team with eight saves while posting a 6-2 record and 4.62 ERA.

Harper notched 59 strikeouts in 48.2 innings pitched this season and held opponents to a .289 batting average.

 

Those two join senior southpaw Jack Snodgrass who was selected Tuesday by the San Francisco Giants in the 27th round.

Also selected in the draft were two Austin Peay signees – right-handed pitcher Clint Wright and shortstop Reid Mathews. Wright, of Lawrenceburg, TN, was selected in the 22nd round (686th overall pick) by Atlanta. He was 5-2 with a 3.83 ERA as a sophomore at Columbia State Community College. Mathews, of Kingsport, TN, was selected in the 36th round (1052nd overall pick) by the Pittsburgh Pirates and recently completed his senior season at Dobyns-Bennett High School.
