Lynchburg, VA – Austin Peay State University freshman catcher Matt Wollenzin has been named to the 2011 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Freshman All-American First Team, the organization announced Monday.
Wollenzin, of Lakewood, CO, was one of 34 freshmen college baseball players from around the country selected to the two teams. He finished the 2011 campaign with a .373 batting average in 36 games with 19 RBI.After beginning the season as the Govs second option at catcher, Wollenzin used a strong effort at the plate and solid defensive skills to take over the Govs No. 1 catching role during the second Ohio Valley Conference weekend.
He posted a .403 batting average in 27 games after taking over the role and helped propel the Govs to a 23-10 record during the month, including the program’s seventh OVC regular-season title and its fourth OVC tournament crown.
Wollenzin batted .412 in conference play, finishing second among Govs hitters, with 14 RBI and was one of three freshmen named to the league’s all-freshman squad.
Wollenzin becomes the first OVC athlete to receive NCBWA recognition. Since 2008, the NCBWA membership has selected a Freshman All-American squad and named national Freshman Player and Pitcher of the Year award winners.
