Mayor’s Fitness Event to Feature Mission Clarksville Garden

City of ClarksvilleClarksville, TN – Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan will have the second of her fitness events immediately following Mission Clarksville’s Passing of the Shovel ceremony at 4:00pm. Friday at the group’s community garden on Mount Carmel Road.

At the event, the Mayor will be gardening, a great outdoor activity that gets people moving while producing rewards of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as beautiful plants and flowers.

The first fitness event in May was called Walk with the Mayor and featured a one-mile walk from the Ajax Senior Citizens Center to Veterans Plaza along a new sidewalk recently constructed to enable Center patrons to walk or roll their wheelchairs to the plaza without entering the street. A steering committee that is helping form the Mayor’s Fitness Council has decided to rename the monthly fitness events Mayor’s Motion. The new name better represents the wide range of activities McMillan will participate in with citizens to promote a healthier lifestyle in the community.

A resolution establishing the Mayor’s Fitness Council is to be presented to the City Council for a vote on July 7th. The Mayor at that time will appoint members of the Council, who will assist people in raising their overall fitness level and promote good health while helping them develop a lifestyle to sustain it.

Partnering with Mission Clarksville for the Mayor’s Motion highlights two objectives of the Mayor’s Fitness Council – promoting proper nutrition along with physical activity to achieve fitness and having the Fitness Council serve as a liaison between various community groups working toward the common goal of Clarksville becoming the state’s healthiest city.

Mission Clarksville has developed a Food Initiative program of growing nutritious foods for local hunger relief agencies that are helping disadvantaged people in the community who may not be able to afford fresh fruits and vegetables. Work in the community garden is performed by high school-age youths from every Clarksville-Montgomery County high school. The third annual Passing of the Shovel ceremony represents the transfer of work responsibilities at the garden from one group of youths to another.

The garden is located on Mount Carmel Road, just off U.S. Highway 41A South. Turn left just after the East Montgomery Utility District building, 5195 Highway 41A South. Mission Clarksville volunteers will host garden tours, starting at 3:30pm and the ceremony begins at 4:00pm.
