Nashville Beats New Orleans Again, 9-2

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds hung a 9-2 loss on the New Orleans Zephyrs on Sunday night at Greer Stadium in the second game of a four-game series.

Winners of four of its last five overall, Nashville (35-42) has outscored New Orleans, 95-36, in the teams’ 14 meetings so far this season, winning 10 of those contests.

Nine different players posed a hit in the victory, highlighted by homers from Eric Farris and Mat Gamel.

Sounds starter Amaury Rivas (6-7) allowed two runs on eight hits while fanning six in six innings pitched. Rivas has tossed four quality starts in all four of his outings against New Orleans this season, going 4-0 with a 1.73 ERA (5er/26.0ip) and 16 strikeouts.

New Orleans plated their first run in the top of the first inning on a bases loaded groundout.

Nashville answered back by sending 10 batters to dish and plating four runs in the bottom of the first. New Orleans Tom Koehler committed a fielding error and issued two walks to quickly load the bases. Gamel drove in the first run with an infield groundout followed by a softly hit RBI double by Jordan Brown.  Third baseman Zelous Wheeler then hit a two-run single that concluded the Sounds rally at 4-1.

The Zephyrs hit consecutive doubles in the top of the fourth inning to score their other run. Chris Aguila led off the frame with a double to left field and scored as Ozzie Martinez nailed a two-bagger to left.

The Sounds extended their lead to 6-2 in the next frame. After Mike Rivera singled to center, Farris belted his fourth homer of the season over the left field wall. The two-run shot was his first home run since May 24 at Tacoma.

Nashville went ahead at 9-2 in the bottom of the seventh. After consecutive singles by Farris and Brett Carroll, Gamel tattooed a three-run bomb off of Mariano Gomez onto Chestnut Street. Moving Gamel into sole possession of fifth place for homers in the PCL, the blast was his team-leading 18th of the season and put him into a tie with Olmedo Saenz (1994-96) for 10th place in Sounds franchise history. It was the third straight game that Gamel went yard, also a Sounds high for 2011.

The Nashville bullpen was dominant on the evening. Mike McClendon pitched a scoreless seventh. Takashi Saito pitched a perfect eighth on eight pitches, allowing a groundout, fly out, and a pop out. Zach Braddock fanned one to end the game in a scoreless ninth.

Koehler (5-6) gave up six runs (two earned) on six hits in six innings.

The Sounds and Zephyrs continue their series with Monday night’s 7:05pm contest at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Frankie De La Cruz (2-4, 4.08) takes the mound against New Orleans left-hander Sean West (2-3, 7.94).
