Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Lots of Blue

Trenton Kentucky will hold its annual Heart of Trenton Celebration today, but there was much preparation that had to be done ahead of time in order to welcome several thousand visitors to that tiny town. This year I was invited to help with preparing the annual Quilt Show , which is held at the Golden Threads Drapery Shop on South Main Street.  Visitors will be delighted to see some old favorites as well as newly made quilts from the surrounding areas.  Trenton now has a new quilt shop named Quilt and Sew at Golden Threads, and the owner, Denise Shivers, is also the co-ordinator for the Quilt Show.

The quilts are beautiful and include a thumbnail sketch of the history of quilt fabrics and designs available to this area for more than 100 years.  There are flower-sack quilts, a crazy quilt, and a hand-quilted candle wick show-stopper (which the quiltmaker says is her first and last quilt).  The quilts are artfully arranged by seasons and colors, and visitors are invited to get really close to admire the handwork, but as in most quilt shows, you will be requested not to touch the quilts.  There will be show attendants who will gladly show you the back of a quilt and will know some of its history.

Many of the quilts shown are over 100 years old, and there is a blanket from the Spanish American War on exhibit.  There are also “orphaned blocks”, which are completed blocks that were never included in a completed quilt top, and completed quilt tops that were never quilted.  Most families have found examples of these orphaned blocks and tops in trunks when attics are cleaned, but they just don’t realize the historical value of the fabrics included in the blocks. At last count, there were more than 125 quilts displayed in the show.

This will be a different type of quilt show for most of those who enjoy the Paducah AQS show  with lots of vendors and many buildings to view, but they will feel very welcome and will want to return each year.  There will be a trolley for those who need to Park and Ride to Main Street to enjoy the homemade ice cream, baked goods, Gospel Singing, Bluegrass band, and more than 100 yard sales.  This will be a family event and a great way to start your July 4th holiday weekend.
