Sounds Lose Another Heartbreaker In Texas

Nashville Again Blows Late Lead In Eventual 12-Inning Defeat

Nashville SoundsRound Rock, TX – Doug Deeds belted a walkoff, two-run homer in the bottom of the twelfth to give Round Rock a come-from-behind 9-7 win over the Nashville Sounds on Saturday evening at The Dell Diamond.

The blast, an opposite-field two-run shot to left, came against Sounds reliever Donovan Hand (1-4), who took the loss.

The heartbreaking loss was the seventh straight defeat in Round Rock for Nashville (37-45), which fell to 1-7 in extra-inning action this season.

It marked the second straight night that the Sounds lost a game in which they held a late lead. Round Rock trailed by three in the ninth and was down to its final strike before rehabbing catcher Mike Napoli lifted a windblown three-run homer to left off Daniel Herrera to send the game to extras.

Mark Hamburger (3-3) picked up a win for Round Rock for the second night in a row after authoring two hitless innings of relief work.

Outfielder Caleb Gindl powered the Nashville offense with a 3-for-4 effort that included a homer, two RBIs, and two runs scored.

PCL veteran Chad Tracy (2-for-4) gave the Express an early advantage when he swatted a two-out, two-run homer to left off Sounds starter Amaury Rivas in the bottom of the first inning. Julio Borbon, who led off the frame by drawing a walk, also scored on the slugger’s team-leading 17th longball of the season.

Round Rock increased its lead to 3-0 in the second with another two-out run, as Joey Butler scored on a Deeds double.

Gindl put the Sounds on the board in the third when he led off the inning by ripping his 10th homer of the season, a solo shot to right off Round Rock right-hander Eric Hurley that made it a 3-1 contest.

Brett Carroll extended his longest hitting streak of the year to 10 games and pulled Nashville back within a run when his fourth-inning single off Hurley brought home Eric Farris, who had opened the frame with a triple to right.

Napoli extended the home team’s lead to 4-2 with a solo homer in the fifth before the Sounds rallied to bat around and take their first lead of the evening with a four-run sixth.

Carroll opened the frame with a walk before Erick Almonte and Taylor Green ripped back-to-back RBI doubles off Hurley to tie the contest at 4-4. After a sacrifice bunt move Green to third, the Sounds’ third baseman raced home with the go-ahead run on Gindl’s infield single to second, which chased Hurley from the game as Nashville jumped in front 5-4.

After Gindl stole second, Sounds catcher Wil Nieves greeted Express reliever Ryan Tucker with an RBI single back up the middle to make it a 6-4 Nashville advantage.

Nashville tacked on an insurance run in the eighth when Edwin Maysonet led off with a double against Beau Jones and later scored on a double play groundout to up the visitors’ lead to 7-4.

Mike McClendon was spectacular behind Rivas, retiring nine of the 10 batters he faced over three hitless innings.

Round Rock took immediate advantage of McClendon’s departure in the ninth, rallying to tie the score at 7-7 against Herrera. With two on and two outs, Napoli was down to his final strike when he lifted a wind-blown homer over the wall in left, his second roundtripper of the night and a heartbreaker for Herrera, who suffered his second blown save.

The Sounds had a chance to jump back in front in the tenth, loading the bases against Cody Eppley with only one out. However, the Express right-hander induced an inning-ending double play grounder from Nieves to escape the jam unscathed. On the controversial play, Gindl was ruled to have run out of the basepaths and was called out without a tag from second baseman Matt Kata.

A pair of defensive gems by the Sounds in the bottom of the tenth kept the game going. With one out, Gindl threw out Esteban German at the plate from the left-center gap as he attempted to score from first on a Butler single. Later in the inning, with two runners aboard, right fielder Brandon Boggs made a diving catch of a sinking Deeds liner to end the inning.

After the Sounds went down in order in the top of the eleventh, Hand worked into and out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the inning, escaping with a scoreless frame by striking out ex-Sound Brad Nelson.

The teams wrap up the series with a 7:05pm finale on Sunday evening. Nashville sends right-hander Frankie De La Cruz (3-4, 3.80) to the hill to face former Sounds left-hander Zach Jackson (6-2, 5.65).
