Sellers hired as new Governors running backs coach

APSU Sports: Men’s Football

Austin Peay State University GovernorsClarksville, TN – John David Sellers, who has served Austin Peay State University’s football program as both a student and graduate assistant coach over the past four seasons, has been hired as the program’s new running backs coach.

Sellers replaces Josh Roberts, who resigned last spring to return to school.

After spending three years as a volunteer student assistant coach, Sellers officially became a member of the Austin Peay coaching staff as a graduate assistant in 2010, working with tight ends.

“J.D. has earned it,” APSU coach Rick Christophel said. “He deserves the opportunity to work with us. He know ours terminology. At this late stage in the process, I think it is very important to find someone who knows your terminology and knows your personnel. J.D. was familiar from both areas because he has been working with us the last few years, first as a student coach and then as a graduate assistant last year.

“In hiring Gary Shephard in early June and J.D. now, we have hired a pair of Austin Peay alums who not only know the school and how things are done, but the Ohio Valley Conference as well and what it takes to be successful—win football games—in this conference.”

Sellers came to Austin Peay in 2005 as a quarterback during the non-scholarship era and dressed for multiple games in his freshman season, although he did not play. A subsequent back injury helped Sellers turn his attention to coaching. He worked with the offense in a volunteer capacity from 2007-09, gaining a wide knowledge of the respective positions.

“He has had to spend time with the offensive line, the wide receivers, tight ends—he has a wide spectrum of knowledge of our offense,” Christophel said. “The great thing about J.D. is he has great initiative and is a tireless worker. He has done a little bit of everything, from cutting video, handling equipment, helping with travel…J.D. is going to make some mistakes, just like (new offensive line coach) Tyler Trent. But it is not because he is not working at it. It will be because he doesn’t have the experience or that is he is trying too hard.

“That is what I am excited about. He is going to come in here with a lot of energy and help this program.”

The Baxley, GA, native played for Jack Johnson at Aplling High School where he was named Region Player of the Week while earning all-state honors.

Sellers graduated in May 2010 with a bachelor’s degree in health and human performance.
