Cubs Drop Sounds, 3-1, to End Winning Streak

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds snapped a season-best six-game winning streak with a 3-1 loss to the division-rival Iowa Cubs on Sunday night at Greer Stadium.

Iowa starter Jack Struck (1-3) tossed his best pitching performance of the season for his first Triple-A victory. The 21-year-old surrendered just one run on seven hits in a season-high seven innings pitched with 79 pitches. John Gaub earned his fifth save with a scoreless ninth.

Before the defeat this evening, Nashville (49-53) also had won a streak of eight consecutive games against Iowa, the longest win streak against a single opponent since 2009.

Logan Schafer, Jordan Brown, and Taylor Green each had two hits for Nashville. Coming into the game leading the PCL with 31 hits in July, outfielder Caleb Gindl went 0-for-4 to snap his nine-game hitting streak, the longest active streak on the club.

Iowa catcher Welington Castillo uncorked his 15th homer of the season in the top of the second inning to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead, a solo shot over the left field wall. Cubs top prospect Brett Jackson made it 2-0 in the next inning after crushing a solo homer to center field for his first Triple-A long ball.

The Cubs added their final run in the fifth for a 3-0 advantage. Struck helped his own cause with a leadoff single, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Zach Segovia came into the contest to relieve starter Chase Wright, third baseman DJ LeMahieu singled to left field to move Struck to third, but as Brown committed a fielding error, Struck came home to score.

Nashville scored their only run in the bottom of the sixth. Schafer hit a one-out double off the center field wall and scored as Brown lined a hard-hit single off the right field wall. Schafer’s two-bagger was Nashville’s only hit for extra bases and also extended the Sounds’ extra-base streak to 30 straight games since June 22.

In his first start with the Sounds since being re-signed, Wright (5-6) took the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits and three walks in 4 ½ innings.

The Sounds’ bullpen has not allowed an earned run in their last 18.0 innings of work, dating back six games. Segovia began with 2 1/3 scoreless innings while allowing his only inherited runner to score. Daniel Herrera added 1 1/3 shutout innings. Henderson closed out the game with a scoreless frame.

The Sounds and Cubs wrap of their four-game series with tomorrow’s 7:05pm CT finale at Greer Stadium, the last of eight consecutive games against the division-rivals. Right-hander Josh Butler (5-5, 4.81) takes the mound for Nashville against righty Jay Jackson (5-9, 6.18).
