Nashville Wins 8-3 Over Cubs In Finale

Nashville SoundsNashville, TN – The Nashville Sounds handed the division-rival Iowa Cubs an 8-3 defeat in the finale of a four-game set on Monday evening on Greer Stadium. Nashville (50-53) took three of four from Iowa in the series, which also has won seven of the last eight games against the division-rivals.

Nashville exploded for three, two-run homers on the evening in the victory, as Taylor Green (2-for-3), Mat Gamel (1-for-4), and Brandon Boggs (1-3) all went yard. Edwin Maysonet also added two hits.

In his fifth quality start for the victory, Butler (6-5) gave up two runs on three hits while fanning four in six innings of work. In his last six starts, Butler has recorded 2.38 ERA (9er/34.0ip) while striking out 31 batters and holding opponents to a .211 average (26-for-123) over that stretch.

The Sounds took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. After first baseman Jordan Brown reached base on a two-out fielding error, Green hammered a two-run shot over the right field wall, his 15th of the season.

Iowa first baseman Scott Moore homered in the next frame to trim the lead to 2-1. The home run was his eighth of the season.

Nashville tacked on a run for a 3-1 advantage in the second as Butler helped his own cause. With two outs in the frame, Iowa pitched around Boggs to pitch to Butler, who crushed the first pitch he saw for an RBI double to the gap in right center.

Gamel hit his team-leading 20th homer on the year in the next inning to give the Sounds a 5-1 lead. Maysonet lined a single to center and later came home on Gamel’s two-out, two-run blast.

Both clubs traded blows by scoring a run in the fifth on sacrifice flies. Former Vanderbilt star Ryan Flaherty doubled and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Brett Jackson. Maysonet also reached on a leadoff two-bagger and later scored as Green hit a long fly ball to right field with one out.

Iowa plated their final run on a Moore RBI single in the top of the eighth to come within three runs at 6-3, before Boggs put the icing on the cake with a towering two-run homer in the bottom of the frame.

Donovan Hand surrendered one run on 1 2/3 innings in relief. Mike McClendon recorded the final four outs to finish the game and convert his fifth save. Before the run scored in the eighth inning, the Nashville bullpen had not allowed a run in their last 19.0 innings, dating back six games and seven different pitchers.

Iowa starter Jay Jackson (5-10) was touched for six runs (four earned) on seven hits in five innings for the loss.

The Sounds travel to Oklahoma City to begin a four-game series at 7:05pm CT at RedHawks Field. Left-hander Sam Narron (4-4, 4.04) takes the mound for Nashville against RedHawks righty Brad Hennessey (0-2, 7.88).
