Sounds Extend Win Streak To Six With 7-6 Win Over 51s

Nashville, TN – The red-hot Nashville Sounds extended their winning streak to six with a 7-6 victory over the Las Vegas 51s in front of 9,012 fans on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium.
Nashville (62-59) has been the hottest team in the Pacific Coast League since the All-Star break, improving to 21-10 since July 14th. The six-game win streak matches the club’s longest this season (second occurrence).
The contest was the Sounds’ PCL-leading 47th one-run affair this season (22-25 in those games).
The Sounds grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Logan Schafer led off with an opposite-field, line-drive double to left off Las Vegas starter P.J. Walters, extending his hitting streak to 11 games. Jordan Brown (2-for-3) later plated Schafer with a sacrifice fly to center.
51s center fielder Mike McCoy evened the contest with one swing of the bat in the third, belting a solo homer to left off Sounds starter Sam Narron. It was his second longball of the season and made it a 1-1 contest.
Nashville responded in the home half of the third, plating five runs against Walters to reclaim the lead.
The Sounds took advantage of a pair of Las Vegas errors in the inning and received RBI singles from Brown and Taylor Green as well as a sacrifice fly off the bat of Mat Gamel to move in front by a 6-1 margin.
Las Vegas cut the Nashville lead to 6-4 with four runs in the top of the fifth inning against Narron.
McCoy delivered again for the visitors, looping an RBI single to right-center to score Ricardo Nanita from second to reduce the deficit to 6-2. After a single by Adeiny Hechevarria, Travis Snider drilled a run-scoring double to right and David Cooper added an RBI groundout. The final run of the frame scored when Adam Loewen’s two-out single to deep second allowed Snider to cross home, but Loewen was out on the play to end the inning as he made a wide turn past first base.
Once again, the Sounds had an immediate response to a 51s rally with a score of their own in the home half of the frame. Brown greeted new Las Vegas reliever Mike MacDonald with a double to left and scored on Erick Almonte’s one-out single to left to up the lead to 7-5.
Nashville missed a chance to further pad the lead, however, failing to push another run home despite having the bases loaded with one out. MacDonald struck out Caleb Gindl and induced an inning-ending grounder from Edwin Maysonet to escape the jam.
The 51s trimmed the Sounds’ lead to 7-6 in the top of the seventh against reliever Mike McClendon. Hechevarria doubled to left and came home on Cooper’s two-out RBI single to center.
However, Las Vegas got no closer as McClendon, Daniel Herrera, and Zack Segovia kept the visitors off the board the rest of the way.
A trio of Sounds extended lengthy hitting streaks in the contest. Sounds first baseman Mat Gamel singled in the fifth inning to run his longest streak of the year to 12 games, Schafer pushed his streak to 11 games with his first-inning double, and Green’s third-inning single upped the infielder’s current streak to 10 games.
Narron (6-5) picked up just his second win in his last 13 starts for Nashville. The lanky lefty allowed five runs on eight hits over five innings, walking four batters and striking out five.
Segovia recorded the final two outs of the game to secure the victory and nail down his second save of the year.
Walters (7-6) absorbed the loss for the 51s after surrendering six runs (five earned) on six hits in four frames of action.
The teams continue the series with another 6:35pm meeting on Sunday night. Right-hander Amaury Rivas (7-11, 5.01) will toe the slab for the Sounds to face Las Vegas right-hander Kyle Drabek (2-2, 6.58), the son of former Sounds pitcher Doug Drabek.
