Late Rally By Redbirds Gives Sounds 4-1 Loss On Saturday

Nashville SoundsMemphis, TN – A four-run seventh inning propelled the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds to a 4-1 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Saturday evening at AutoZone Park.

With the loss, Nashville (70-72) has dropped three games in a row and eight of its last 12 contests.

Nashville was held to seven hits overall and went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Right fielder Brandon Boggs doubled twice while shortstop Eric Farris added two hits and a stolen base.

Memphis starting pitcher Adam Ottavino (7-8) gave up just one run on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts in seven innings of work for the win. Victor Marte converted his PCL-leading 31st save to end the contest.

Nashville starter Amaury Rivas closed out his 2011 season by tossing five shutout frames in a no-decision. The right-hander allowed just two hits while walking and striking out five. He also had two sacrifice bunts while driving in the Sounds’ lone run.

Nashville scored its only run in the top of the fifth inning. Ottavino opened in the inning with a walk to right fielder Boggs, who moved to third on a hit-and-run with Patrick Arlis singling to right. Boggs would then score on a sacrifice bunt by Rivas.

The Redbirds took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh thanks to two Farris throwing errors at shortstop. Reliever Tim Dillard issued a one-out walk to Freddie Bynum and allowed a single to the rehabbing Nick Punto to start the rally. Nick Stavinoha then hit an infield grounder to Farris, who committed his first error of the frame that allowed Bynum to score. Later in the inning with the bases loaded and two outs, Matt Carpenter hit an inning-ending grounder to shortstop, but Farris tossed wide of the bag again that let Punto score another unearned run. Next batter Andrew Brown concluded the scoring with a two-run single to left field.

Dillard (4-2) was charged for four runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks in two innings in relief. Justin James pitched a perfect inning in his first game since re-joining the club from Double-A Huntsville.

The Sounds and Redbirds continue their series at 6:05pm CT on Sunday night at AutoZone Park. Nashville will send right-hander Josh Butler (9-7, 5.11) to the mound for his final start of the season.
