WKU tops Lady Govs soccer, 3-1

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Western Kentucky, Friday night, at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field.

The Lady Govs fell to 3-1 overall, while the Lady Toppers improved to 3-1. Austin Peay remains winless in the all-time series against WKU, which now holds a 6-0 advantage.

“I’m disappointed with the result,” head coach Kelley Guth said. “At the end of the day, it was a great opportunity for our team to take something positive away from the game. Western Kentucky exposed some of our weaknesses and we’ll become a better team because of it.”

Western Kentucky led 2-0 when Austin Peay sophomore Joceline Quiceno found the back of the net in the 40th minute on a service by sophomore Emily Kink. A WKU foul placed Kink just inside the half line when she played the ball to Quiceno, who was inside the box.

Unfortunately for the Lady Govs, it was the only offense they could muster against the physical Lady Topper squad. In fact, the second half saw APSU manage only two shots, with none on goal.

Emily Kink“We had a couple of opportunities,” Guth said. “We got ourselves back into the game scoring a nice goal off some hard work by our players. We just didn’t have the same fire in the second half that we finished the first half with.”

Austin Peay allowed Western Kentucky’s first goal in the 22nd minute and a handball inside the box set up a penalty kick which made it 2-0, in the 37th minute. Quiceno’s goal had APSU trailing 2-1 at the break, its season’s first halftime deficit.

The Lady Toppers set the final margin with a 52nd-minute goal.

For the game, Western Kentucky outshot Austin Peay 12-7. Mallory Outerbridge led the Lady Toppers, scoring the first goal and assisting on the final goal. Quiceno had two shots for APSU, as did sophomore Tatiana Ariza and junior Jocelyn Murdoch.

Austin Peay returns to action with a 2:00pm, Sunday contest against future Ohio Valley Conference member Belmont.
