Austin Peay State University Lady GovsHuntsville, AL – Rain and more rain greeted Austin Peay State University women’s golf team and the rest of the field in the first round of the Chris Banister Golf Classic, Sunday, being played at Hampton Cove’s Highland Course, a Robert Trent Jones-designed layout.

As a result, the Lady Govs sit in seventh place after the first round following a 331.

“It rained all day long,” APSU coach Sara Robson. “The conditions were nasty. We had to break out the rain gear in the first round of our first tournament of the fall. But in saying all of that, I don’t think we did the little things right today and that played a part in our score.”

Sophomore Rachel Deaton led the Lady Govs with an 80 while sophomore Tala Mumford and freshman Marta Gutierrez, in her first tournament, each fired 83s. Sophomore Tabitha Beard had an 85 while junior Holly Batey was at 88.

Rachel DeatonAustin Peay’s best score, however, came from a junior playing in her first tournament. Juco transfer Lauren Bond tallied a 79 while senior Ashley Averitt followed with a 93 and freshman Meghan Mueller shot an opening-round 99.

“We just had way too many big numbers (on individual holes),” Robson said. “This is a placement course and we didn’t do a job of playing the course today. I think we will do a lot better tomorrow, if he get to play.”

Heavy rains are expected overnight and at least through the early part of Monday.
