APSU Sports Information: CIAF Athlete of the Week

Austin Peay State UniversityXiamar RichardsClarksville, TN – Xiamar Richards, a sophomore on the Austin Peay State University women’s cross country team, has been named the Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week.

The Clarksville native won the women’s five-kilometer race, Saturday, at the Fleet Feet Sports/Earl Jacoby Memorial hosted by Alabama-Huntsville. Richards is the first Lady Gov to win an individual race since 2008, when Bertha Castillo won the same event.

The sophomore’s finishing time (19:11) was 31 seconds ahead of her closest competitor.

Richards’ victory led the way for the Lady Govs third-place team finish, a stark improvement from the seventh-place finish a week ago at the Belmont Opener.

The Copies in a Flash APSU Athlete of the Week is selected by the APSU Sports Information staff each Tuesday during the academic year. Copies in a Flash, of Clarksville, sponsors the award.

Other notable performances by Austin Peay athletes included:

Junior Nikki Doyle, of the volleyball team, finished the Butler Invitational with 44 kills (4.00 kps). She recorded 15 kills against both Central Michigan and host Butler. Doyle ranks second among OVC players in kills per set (3.67) this season.

Senior Boniface Yator, of the men’s cross country team, finished the Fleet Feet Sports/Earl Jacoby Memorial with a sixth-place finish, leading the Governors to a third-place team finish. His time (27:09) in the eight-kilometer race was just 1:27 behind the winning pace set by UAH’s Blaise Binns.

Junior Emily Perkins, of the women’s soccer team, scored the game winning goal in the Lady Govs 2-1 win against Troy. She was one of three Lady Govs (joining Tatiana Ariza and Jocelyn Murdoch) named to the Port City Classic All-Tournament Team.
