25th Annual Governors Golf Classic set for September 23rd-24th

Austin Peay State UniversityClarksville, TN – What started out as “Goober Golf” back in 1987, is now 25 years old. The 25th Annual Governors Golf Classic is set for Friday-Saturday, September 23rd-24th, at Swan Lake Golf Course.

George “Goober” Lindsey, the former television star of the Andy Griffith Show and Hee Haw, was the featured guest host for that first tourney, which also featured several other veteran country music stars.

Twenty five years later the tourney remains a fun but important fund raiser for Austin Peay State University’s athletic department.

For a fourth straight year, the annual tournament will occur on succeeding days instead of the same day, with shotgun starts for each round. After a summer of refurbishment, the tournament will be played on new greens at Swan Lake.

Sponsored by the Governors Club, the four-person scramble will be limited to 60 teams, 30 per shotgun starts at noon, Friday, September 23rd, and 8:00am Saturday, September 24th.

For a fifth straight year, men and women’s divisions also have been established. Cost is $400.00 per team, or $100.00 per person. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit Austin Peay State University Athletics.

Prizes will be awarded to the first, second, third, fourth and last place for each flight. Women’s division prizes will be awarded to first, second and last place on Saturday. Women’s teams playing Friday will be included in the women’s division, Saturday.

Players age 65 and older may hit from the senior tees while women may hit from the ladies’ tees.

Like last year the tourney dinner, previously held on Friday night following the tourney’s first round, will be Thursday night, September 22nd, at the Charles Hand Farm. The social hour will be at 6:00pm with the dinner beginning at 7:00pm. Individuals not playing can still attend the dinner for $35.00 per couple.
