Austin Peay State UniversityTrey TarpleyClarksville, TN – Sophomore Trey Tarpley, of Austin Peay State University men’s golf team, picked up his season’s second Ohio Valley Conference Golfer of the Week honor, the league office announced, Wednesday.

“This is another great award for Trey,” head coach Kirk Kayden said. “This is the second time in four weeks Trey has led us. He put up another clutch performance in a high pressure situation on a tough golf course.”

Tarpley helped the Govs race back from an eight-stroke deficit to beat Southeastern Conference’s Kentucky at the UC Bearcat Invitational, hosted by Cincinnati, Tuesday. The Govs young squad – comprised of one junior, three sophomores and a freshman – made the most of playing in the final pairing to win their first fall tournament.

The sophomore from Hendersonville, TN earned his season’s second top-five finish, shooting 74-72-70 for a three-round 216, which led the Govs.

After shooting the Govs worst round to open the tournament, Tarpley seemingly turned it around for the final 36 holes at the challenging Traditions Golf Club. Tarpley found his stroke around the greens and it showed as he reduced his putts each round, having 35 in the first round, 30 in the second and only 24 putts in the final round. In fact, he one-putted each of his final four holes to finish the tournament.

“For him to come through like he did was great for him and great for the team,” Kayden said. “He’s been the go-to guy when we’ve had a chance to win and this time we were able to pull it off. Trey’s getting better each week and that makes our team pretty dangerous.”

Tarpley also was named OVC Golfer of the Week, September 21st, after a third-place finish at Kentucky’s UK Bluegrass Invitational.
