Seeks Public Input on Programs
Nashville, TN – The Tennessee Historical Commission will host an open house on Monday, October 17th, from 1:00pm until 4:00pm, at its Clover Bottom Mansion offices located at 2941 Lebanon Road in Nashville.
“We welcome the opportunity for the public to meet our staff and learn more about our ongoing work to protect Tennessee’s treasured historic places,” said Patrick McIntyre, executive director of the Tennessee Historical Commission.
As the state’s Historic Preservation Office, the Tennessee Historical Commission is responsible for overseeing a variety of state and federal programs, including administering the National Register of Historic Places, placing historic markers and overseeing the Certified Local Government Program.
More than 40,000 individual structures are now listed on the National Register in Tennessee, and over the past 35 years the office has helped shepherd nearly $850 million in historic tax credit projects across the state. The Commission also awards several hundred thousand dollars in Federal Historic Preservation Fund grants each year for qualified survey, planning and restoration projects in Tennessee.
The Tennessee Historical Commission’s other responsibilities include its 17 state-owned historic sites, which consist of landmark structures such as Alex Haley’s boyhood home in Henning, TN, and the Carter House in Franklin.
Additionally, the Tennessee Wars Commission program is dedicated to preserving sites associated with military history, beginning with the French and Indian War through the Civil War. Since 1994, the Wars Commission has helped save over 7,000 acres of imperiled historic battlefield properties in the state.
In addition to hosting the Open House, the Tennessee Historical Commission is seeking public input on its programs and goals through an online survey. The survey results will help guide an update to the State Historic Preservation Plan, which is being completed this fall.
“We’ve had an exceptional response and decided to extend the deadline until November 1st,” added McIntyre. “Our hope is to get a variety of responses – especially from those who are not necessarily well-acquainted with our work.”
