Clarksville-Montgomery County Show Record Sales and Lodging Tax Receipts

Clarksville Area Chamber of CommerceClarksville, TN – Amid the troubled national economy, Clarksville-Montgomery County has been fortunate to have continued economic growth, as was seen in the latest release of local  sales and lodging tax receipts.

James Chavez, President and CEO of the Clarksville-Montgomery County Economic Development Council (EDC), recently shared data to the investors of the Aspire Foundation that showed the ripple effect of the community’s comprehensive approach to economic development.

According to Brenda Radford, Montgomery County Trustee, sales and lodging tax receipts for both August and September came in at over $180,000 each month. The actual August sales tax collections reached an all-time, one-month high of $5.34 million.

Chavez stated that two primary contributing factors of this increase in revenue are, “the large scale amateur sporting events we hosted this summer and the ongoing construction at the Hemlock Semiconductor, L.L.C. site.”

HSC, L.L.C. currently boasts 2,700 workers at the plant site, which contributes to many of the hotel and motel properties running at an average occupancy rate of 80 percent, or more, during the work-week. It should also be noted that August is also the same month that the tax free holiday occurs, making the numbers that much stronger.

Chavez also recently had the opportunity to speak to a group of locally-based apartment community managers. Many reported that they are running at full occupancy or very close. This boom in the rental property sector can be attributed to the full return of the 101st Airborne Division, the ongoing growth at Austin Peay State University and the thousands of contractors associated with the HSC, L.L.C. project.

With 2012 quickly approaching, the team at the Clarksville-Montgomery County EDC, to include the Chamber of Commerce, Industrial Development Board and Convention and Visitors Bureau, along with community leaders, continue to work aggressively to keep the city-county in a positive economic position in the year to come.
