Aspire Foundation Presents Clarksville-Montgomery County School System STEM Academy with Check

Clarksville, TN – At the November 8th Clarksville Montgomery County School System (CMCSS) Board meeting, Aspire Foundation Chairman, Terry Strange and Economic Development Council President and CEO, James Chavez presented the local school system with a $10,000 check to support the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) program. The grant was provided through the privately funded Aspire Foundation.

Austin Peay Basketball Governors sign two on first day of early signing period

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University men’s basketball team has added to its backcourt and frontcourt with a pair of prep signings for the 2012-13 season as the early recruiting period opened, Wednesday.

Cory Arentsen, a 6-5, 185-pound guard from Mater Dei High School in Breese, IL, and Preston Herring, a 6-7 forward from West Limestone High School in Lester, AL, have signed national letters of intent to play basketball for the Govs.

Burke recommended for General Court-Martial

Fort Campbell, KY – The investigating officer in the second Article 32 investigation held for Sgt. Brent Burke has recommended that the charges be referred to a general court-martial. A trial date has been set for February 6th, 2012.

Burke has been charged with violating clauses (1) and (4) of Article 118 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice.  “Article 118 of the UCMJ states that, “any person subject to this chapter whom without justification or excuse, unlawfully kills a human being, when he – (1) has a premeditated design to kill; (2) intends to kill or inflict great bodily harm; (3) is engaged in an act which is inherently dangerous to others and evinces a wanton disregard of human life; or (4) is engaged in the perpetration of burglary, sodomy, rape robbery, or aggravated arson; – is guilty of murder and shall suffer such punishment as a court-martial may direct, except that if found guilty under clause (1) or (4), he shall suffer death or imprisonment for life as a court-martial may direct.” «Read the rest of this article»

Clarksville, TN – Needing to find a replacement for senior forward/center Jasmine Rayner, Austin Peay State University women’s basketball coach Carrie Daniels has opened the 2011 early signing period by adding Aspriona Gilbert, of Myrtle, MS, who signed a national letter of intent, Wednesday.

Gilbert, a 6-0 center, averaged 22.8 points and 11.9 rebounds per game last season as a junior at Myrtle High School, leading her team to the Class 1A state championship game, where they finished as the runner-up. «Read the rest of this article»

Cassini Flyby Focuses on Saturn’s Moon Enceladus

Pasadena, CA – Saturn’s moon Enceladus shows its icy face and famous plumes in raw, unprocessed images captured by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft during its successful flyby on November 6th, 2011.

During this Enceladus encounter, the 16th of Cassini’s mission, the spacecraft passed the moon at distance of about 300 miles (500 kilometers) at 10:11pm PDT on November 5th (04:49 UTC on November 6th).

NASA's Cassini spacecraft obtained this unprocessed image of Enceladus on November 6th, 2011 and received on Earth November 7th, 2011. Bat Govs open fall signing period, add Jared Carkuff

Clarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s baseball team began the fall early signing period, Wednesday, adding right-handed pitcher Jared Carkuff, of Bell Buckle, who has signed a letter of intent to join the team in 2013.

Carkuff, a 6-2, 160-pound, right-handed pitcher, helped lead Cascade High School to the Tennessee Class 1A regional final last season. He compiled a 5-2 record with two saves and a 1.31 earned-run average. Carkuff struck out 102 batters – allowing just 26 walks – in 69.1 innings pitched. At the plate, he batted .400 with three home runs and 28 RBI. Carkuff was named All-District 9 and All-Region 5.
