Go Commando Donates $35,000 to Local Organizations

Go Commando Half Marathon and 5kClarksville, TN – The Go Commando Half Marathon and 5k presented by CDE Lightband announced Tuesday they would donate $35,000 to local non-profits and community organizations. The largest recipients, Clarksville Area YMCA and Fort Campbell Historical Foundation were on hand to accept the donations.

“The intention of the Go Commando Half Marathon and 5k will always be to give back to the community; this money emphasizes that mission in a big way,” Channel Lemon, one of the Race Directors, stated.

The money given to the Clarksville Area YMCA will be used to fund their ABC Outreach and Restore Ministries programs. ABC Outreach allows breast cancer survivors to attend a 16-week course to rebuild strength as well as, educating and empowering participants as they continue to heal. Restore Ministries works to provide healing and hope for those struggling with life’s toughest issues. Both programs are free-of-charge to participants.

James “O’Bee” O’Bryant, Executive Director, and Amanda Cherry, Community Relations Director, accepted the check on behalf of the Clarksville Area YMCA.

The Fort Campbell Historical Foundation provides support and assistance to Fort Campbell soldiers and their families. The Foundation works closely with the Don F. Pratt Military Museum and oversees plans for the future Wings of Liberty Military Museum.

“This entire event has been a great experience,” said Go Commando committee member Robert Nichols, Executive Director of the Fort Campbell Historical Foundation. “We are thankful for the contribution and are looking forward to future races.” COL (R) Ted Crozier accepted the check on behalf of the Fort Campbell Historical Foundation.

Additional community organizations which received donations are: Austin Peay State University Track & Field, Clarksville Running Club, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Reserve and Clarksville Parks & Recreation.

In its inaugural year, the Go Commando Half Marathon and 5k presented by CDE Lightband saw a combined total of 1,000 registrants. The economic impact of the event was an estimated $30,629.00 and nearly 150 volunteers were on hand to assist during the event.

The Go Commando Half Marathon and 5k presented by CDE Lightband began in 2011 as a tribute to the soldiers at nearby Fort Campbell and to promote health and fitness to the community. The event is organized and supported entirely by local businesses and organizations. All proceeds from the event will go to support local initiatives: YMCA’s Restore Ministry and ABC Outreach Program, the Wings of Liberty Historical Foundation and others.
