Former Austin Peay Lady Govs Softball coach, Tara Csernecky, dies

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsHavestraw, NY – Funeral services for former Austin Peay State University softball coach Tara Csernecky will be held 9:30pm, Thursday, at Central Presbyterian Church in Havestraw, NY.

Ms. Csernecky, age 40, died Saturday in her home in Stony Point, NY.

Viewing will be held 2:00pm-4:00pm and 7:00pm-9:00pm, Wednesday at Holts Funeral Home in Havestraw, NY.

Csernecky was hired in August 2008 as Austin Peay softball coach and served six seasons (1999-2004) as the Lady Govs head coach. Since leaving Austin Peay and Clarksville, she has been serving as a high school teacher in the Stony Point area.

Before coming to Austin Peay, Csernecky was part of the North Carolina-Greensboro coaching staff that directed the program to its first NCAA tournament appearance in 1997. A West Havestraw, NY , native, McCoy started her playing career as a pitcher-catcher at Greensboro (NC) College, before transferring to UNC-Greensboro as a walk-on. She later earned a scholarship and helped the former Division II program convert to the Division I status. She later was selected team captains and was part of a team that advanced to the 1994 NCAA Play-In series.

Csernecky graduated from North Carolina-Greensboro in 1994 with a bachelor’s degree in sociology.
