Clarksville Parks and RecreationClarksville, TN – The weekly Clarksville Parks and Recreation Department Recreation Report provides Clarksvillians with a glimpse at the activities and events that are available from the Parks and Recreation Department for them to enjoy together as a family.

This weeks highlights include:

Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King JrCome out to the Kleeman Community Center, located at 166 Cunningham Lane, Monday, January 16th to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

A children’s program to include a video and activities will be held from 12:00pm to 2:00pm, followed by guest speaker, President of the Clarksville NAACP, Mr. Jimmy Garland, and others from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

Nominate a Coach Today!

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2nd Annual Clarksville Sports Festival Legends Awards. The City of Clarksville and Montgomery County Parks & Recreation Departments and Legends Bank have partnered in an effort to honor both current and past coaches who are or have made a unique difference and solid contribution to sports and athletics in the Clarksville-Montgomery County area.

Nomination forms are available to pick up at the Parks & Recreation Main Office, downloaded or completed online at www.cityofclarksville.com/parks&rec/athletics.php. All nomination forms must be received by 4:30pm on January 30th.

Clarksville Sports Festival

Clarksville Sports FestivalThe Clarksville Parks & Recreation Department is currently seeking businesses and companies interested in being exhibitors at the 2012 Sports Festival. The festival, to be held from 9:00am to 4:00pm on March 17th at various locations on Austin Peay’s campus, will feature demonstrations, mini-clinics, give-a-ways and more, all celebrating sports and athletics in our local and surrounding communities. Well over hundreds attendees are expected, which will provide maximum exposure for exhibitors.

The exhibition application is available at the Parks & Recreation Department located at 102 Public Square or online at http://recpro.cityofclarksville.com. All forms must be turned in no later than February 24th. The Early Bird deadline is February 3rd.

Volunteers are also needed to ensure a successful festival. We would love for you or your organization to help! Call 931.645.7476 to sign up today.

Scuba

Scuba Diving LessonsThe Indoor Aquatic Center will hold its second introductory class Saturday, January 21st at 2:00pm for those wanting to get a taste of the scuba experience and an overview of what is involved in Scuba Certification. Class is $25.00 and is open to ages 10 and up. Visit http://recpro.cityofclarksville.com for more information and to register online.

If you’re ready to get your PADI Scuba Certification, register today for our January 30 class. We have two options available. The “Open Water Diver PADI Certification Scuba Referral” for $200, which provides you with classroom and pool time, but allows you to complete you certification with another PADI instructor (while on vacation). The Center also offers the “Complete PADI Certification” for $300.00. This option includes classroom, pool and 4 dives in the TN area.

Spring Adult Softball/Kickball Meeting Scheduled

Registration for Adult Spring Softball and Kickball leagues begins soon with an organizational meeting scheduled for 2:00pm on January 28th at Burt-Cobb Community Center. League participants, including coaches, sanctioning representatives, and umpires are invited to attend.

There will be an opportunity to provide feedback on the individual league rules.
