David Shifrin, Mingzhe Wang, and Gloria Chien to perform for the Clarksville Community Concert Association at APSU

The Clarksville Community Concert AssociationClarksville, TN – This Tuesday, January 24th, 2012 at 7:30pm in the Concert Hall at Austin Peay State University, the Clarksville Community Concert Association will present a performance by David Shifrin, one of the world’s most noted clarinetists. Shifrin will play a concert of great masterworks of the clarinet repertory, including a Poulenc Sonata for Two Clarinets where Dr. Mingzhe Wang, assistant professor of clarinet at Austin Peay State University has been invited to assist. Gloria Chien will be the pianist for this stellar concert.

This is a valuable opportunity for Clarksville audiences to hear a world class artist of his stature. Solo clarinetists are a rare find. David Shifrin is one of a few recitalists on the world stages and is in constant demand as an orchestral soloist and chamber collaborator.

He has received critical acclaim appearing at such venues as Alice Tully Hall and Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. The New York Times described Mr. Shifrin as “first among equals” and his playing as “luminous … complemented ideally by…Ms. Chien’s buoyant touch.” Mr. Shifrin has served as principal clarinetist with the Cleveland Orchestra and American Symphony Orchestra and collaborates frequently with such distinguished ensembles and artists as the Guarneri, Tokyo, and Emerson String Quartets, Wynton Marsalis, and pianists Emanuel Ax and Andre Watts.

Mingzhe Wang, assistant professor of clarinet at Austin Peay State University studied clarinet with Shifrin at Yale University while pursuing his doctorate. Wang found him to be a most inspiring teacher. Wang exclaims, “I am absolutely honored and excited to be playing a duet with him.”

In addition to studying with Shifrin, Wang has heard him perform numerous times. Wang stated, “ He transfixes audiences with his playing. They tend to forget that he is playing a clarinet because he brings the music to the foreground. The clarinet just seems to disappear. Shifrin brings an incomparable elegance to the stage with his artistry, virtuosity, and nuance.”

Mr. Shifrin will lead a master class with Austin Peay clarinet students on Tuesday at 12:45pm in the Concert Hall.

Tickets to the concert can be obtained online at www.clarksvillemusic.org or calling the ticket chair at 931.552.6093 or 1.877.811.0200. Tickets are only $5.00 for non-APSU students and $25.00 for adults. Austin Peay students with an APSU ID are admitted free of charge.
