Nick Steward says he can do both, if elected to Tennessee District 74 House Seat

Clarksville City Councilman Nick Steward welcomes the attendeesClarksville, TN – Ward 1 Clarksville City Councilman Nick Steward says, if elected to the Tennessee District 74 house seat in November, he has no plans to step down from the Clarksville city council.

“The residents of Ward 1 elected me to do a job, and I intend to do that” Steward said in an exclusive WJZM interview.  Appearing on “Clarksville in Review” this weekend, Steward said he had been asked by several people to consider running for the state office, once the new district had been drawn.  “I’ve spoken to several state officials who currently serve in dual roles from their community, and it’s perfectly legal, and if elected, I plan to do both” said Steward.

Redistricting is mandated every ten years according to the state constitution, and is done after completion of the census.  Over 40,000 citizens of Montgomery County now reside in the 74th district, which includes Humphries and Houston counties.  It’s currently represented by Democrat John Tidwell, who was first elected in 1996.  Tidwell lives in New Johnsonville and is a graduate of the University of Tennessee, and is a civil engineer.

Steward is in his first year on the city council, and is very passionate about politics, and his call to serve.

“I have a lot of life experiences that make me qualified for office.  I’m a veteran, a businessman, a father and I’m committed to making my world a better place.  I’m committed to Clarksville, I’m committed to Tennessee.  I think having a third voice in the state house is important for Clarksville and the entire district.  We (Clarksville) are third in the state of Tennessee in the amount of gasoline tax we pay, but we’re way down the list on state road projects, and I think that needs to change” said Steward.

Steward, a Republican, is very active in the state Republican party, and serves on the State Pest Control Board, appointed by Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam.

The primary is in August, with the general election in November.  So far, no other candidates have expressed interest in running in this race.  No official word from the incumbent on his intentions in November.
