APSU Sports: Austin Peay Women’s Basketball
Clarksville, TN – The horrible nightmare continues for Austin Peay’s Lady Govs and just doesn’t seem like it’s ever going to end.
This time Tennessee Tech was the culprit in handing the Lady Govs their eighth-straight loss and the 68-65 defeat Monday night further damaged the hopes Austin Peay has of even earning a spot in the season-ending Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
“We’ve got to find away to get over this hump and find some wins,” APSU coach Carrie Daniels said. “We’ve been so close with every team. Except for the Eastern Illinois game, we’ve been in a position where we could win. We just can’t quite get there. We’re still fighting and I still fell like they are giving the effort, but the bottom line is we do have to get some wins if we want to get into this OVC Tournament and the time is clicking away.”The Lady Govs (5-20, 2-10 OVC) actually mounted a late-comeback that got them in position to win after they answered a 10-0 Tennessee Tech run with an 8-0 run of their own.
Tennessee Tech (12-14, 8-4 OVC) used its 10-0 run to take a 64-57 lead with 5:43 to play on Rachel Gildden’s 3-pointer.
Austin Peay responded with its 8-0 run and used that to take a 65-64 advantage with 4:04 left in the game on Shelby Olszewski’s lay up.
It’s just that the Lady Govs never got another basket to go in after that and watched Tech’s Kellie Cook throw up a 3 that gave the Golden Eagles a 66-65 lead with 2:06 to play.
But the game still wasn’t over and nine-times-out-of-10 when Whitney Hanley shoots a midrange jumper it goes in. But this one with 47.5 seconds to go did everything but go in. The ball bounced on the left side of the rim, then on the back, almost went through the hoop but rattled out halfway down and came back out over the left side of the rim. That led to Tech going up 68-65 with 22.1 seconds left on Jala Harris’ lay up.
“It was a great shot,” Daniels said. “And any other time that shot would have gone in and gone through the hoop.”
The Lady Govs came right back down and tried to tie it up, but Leslie Martinez’s 3-point attempt was blocked with eight seconds left. Hanley actually got the rebound, but she couldn’t get the shot up before the clock ran out.
Hanley led the Lady Govs with 16 points and eight rebounds and Meghan Bussabarger, who missed the past six games because of injury, added 12 points.
Kaitlyn Hill continues to impress and she chipped in 11 points, four rebounds, three blocks and two steals in 19 minutes of action.
Tennessee Tech was led by Tacarra Hayes’ 18 points, Harris’ 14 and Glidden’s 12.
The Lady Govs now take the week off and will try to end their eight-game losing next Monday at Murray State at 7:00pm. And being on the road is a tough place for an Austin Peay team that is just 1-5 as visitors in OVC play and 3-10 overall.
