Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – After two days of delays, Austin Peay State University’s softball team will travel south to Mississippi to play Jackson State in a doubleheader on Monday afternoon, in the first meeting between the two schools on the softball diamond.

The two teams were originally scheduled to play a three-game series starting on Saturday with a doubleheader at the JSU Softball Complex and a Sunday single game.

But rain forced Saturday’s games to be postponed until Sunday, but then a broken water main into the campus of Jackson State forced a second delay and cancellation of one of the games in the series, with the other two games being pushed back to a Monday doubleheader, starting at noon.

Austin Peay comes into the series after posting a 1-3 mark in its season-opening weekend at the Kennesaw State Classic on February 11th-12th, while Jackson State is 3-3 after going 2-3 at the Southeastern Louisiana Tournament on the same dates.

The Lady Govs will look to build on several outstanding hitting performances from the season’s first weekend, as three Austin Peay players hit more than .300, led by freshman Sarah Rasmussen’s .375 average, with sophomore Lauren de Castro – who was named to the all-tournament team — right behind her at .364 with a home run and five RBI.

Freshman Lauren Bradley rounds out the .300 hitters for the Lady Govs, finishing the classic with a .308 batting average.

Senior Catie Cozart (.286, four RBI), red-shirt sophomore Kristin Whitmire (home run) and Shelby Norton (.250, three RBI) also had solid opening weeks for the Lady Govs.

Junior pitcher Morgan Brewer picked up the Austin Peay win in relief at the classic, as the Lady Govs rallied from six runs down to beat Mercer in extra innings, 11-9.

Jackson State is led offensively by junior Tayler Nave, who is batting .529 for the Tigers, with two doubles, a home run, five RBI and 10 stolen bases.

Sophomore Breea Jamerson led the Tigers pitching staff with a 4-3 record and a 3.24 ERA.
