Brentwood, TN – Junior shortstop Reed Harper, who batted .600 during Austin Peay State University‘s baseball opening weekend, has been named the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
Harper, of Clarksville TN (Clarksville High School), went 9-for-15 with four runs scored, a double, home run and four RBI as Austin Peay won three of four games against Illinois State in the opening weekend of college baseball action. His biggest hit of the series came in Game 3 as his walk-off home run capped a 3-2 come-from-behind victory and secured the series victory. The league’s preseason selection at shortstop after earning first-team honors last spring, Harper opened the 2012 season with a 4-for-5 effort, Friday, scoring three times in the Govs 9-6 victory. He was held without a hit in the opening game of Saturday’s doubleheader but did bat in one run in the Govs 2-0 victory. Harper followed that with a 3-for-4, two RBI effort in the nightcap, which included the walk-off blast and a third-inning game-tying RBI single. He wrapped up the weekend with a 2-for-3 performance in Sunday’s finale.
Austin Peay begins a four-game road trip with a 4:00pm, Wednesday contest at Memphis.
