Austin Peay Lady Govs Softball face the Tennessee State Tigers in midweek doubleheader

Austin Peay State University Lady GovsClarksville, TN – Austin Peay State University’s softball team hopes to carry the momentum it gained in this past weekend’s Ohio Valley Conference victory over SIU Edwardsville into Wednesday’s midweek conference doubleheader at Tennessee State, beginning at 5:00pm.

The Lady Govs (7-13, 1-5 OVC) defeated SIUE 4-2 in the second game of a doubleheader played on Sunday, to give Austin Peay its first conference win of the season, and a much needed lift heading into the matchup against Tennessee State (7-15, 0-3 OVC) – who comes in having lost eight of its last nine games.

“We know coming into the games that it’s going to be an exceptional battle, with it being an intra-state, as well as conference rivalry,” said Austin Peay coach Casey Dickson after the win on Sunday. “We hope the girls feed off this (win), focus on Tennessee State, bring our best and continue to do what we’ve been working on.”

Lauren BradleyAfter 20 games, sophomore Lauren de Castro leads the Lady Govs hitters with a .302 batting average, as well as runs scored (10) and RBI (12). She also has three double and three home runs.

Freshman Lauren Bradley is second on the team in hitting, with a .288 batting average, with three doubles and eight runs scored.

Senior Catie Cozart is the only other Lady Gov hitting over .270, coming in at .271 and trailing only de Castro on the team in runs scored (nine) and RBI (10).

Lauren de CastroIn the circle, de Castro tops the pitching staff with a 4-3 record and a 2.30 ERA, giving up just under a hit an inning to opponents (48 hits in 48.2 innings of work).

Junior Morgan Brewer (2-6) and Ashley Bolda (1-2) have the other Austin Peay wins.

Tennessee State comes into the doubleheader without a single player hitting over .300, but are led by Jordan Rehl’s .281 batting average, while Jennifer Givens (.278) and Devin Amar (.274) are batting over .270.

Shea Morris leads the Lady Tiger pitching staff, starting 12 of its 22 games, with a 4-8 mark and a 3.84 ERA.

Morris does average over a strikeout per inning pitched, with 80 strikeouts in 78.1 innings of work.
